another kerosene question

I have a salamander heater that uses kerosene. I hadn't needed it for several years, until this last real cold snap. when I went to town to fill the 2 5 gallon cans that I use, I was reminded that I have to sign name and address to buy it. WHY? do states other than ny require the same thing? I didn't think kero is a bomb ingredient or anything. just another of life's annoyances.

Just guessing, could it have to do with the tax rate? As in declaring that you aren't using it as fuel in a highway vehicle?

Like someone else suggested, its just to declare its being used as heating fuel not road fuel. Some stations have you sign, some dont.

IIRC that's the reason. That's for K-1 kero out of the pump. Kero going into a home fuel tank you don't sign. Last time I got kero I didn't need to sign though. Maybe someone figured out that since K-1 is at about $4.75 a gal and on road diesel is at $3.90 it's not likely anyone is going to fill up with K-1!!!

FYI- I run farm diesel in my salamander thats designed for kero. Always have, never had a problem related to fuel.

It's not required at the pay-at-the-pump station where I buy it in IN.

Aside from blending for extreme cold protection, I cannot imagine why anyone would use kerosene rather than diesel for motor fuel as it is about $1.00/gal more expensive in my area.
