...have worked their magic on my husband's work bench. He bought it 24 years ago.

Recently, he was cleaning up and oiling some engine parts for our old Farmall Regular. When done - he wiped up the excess oil and I thought it made the bench look neat, so snapped a photo. (In a way, I wouldn't mind if our dining table had this look).

What's your work bench look like?

LOL! I can relate - on my 'puter desk, I have an official piling system...

But husband is a neat feller. His shop is better organized than many kitchens.

SOLD... LOL.

Really don't think The Pickers would want it... just an el cheapo little work bench - probably from Menards.

You know how those industrial carts and similar are popular for coffee tables and such now, they bring a few hundred dollars retail, kinda the same effect on the finish, I suppose you could cut the excess off with a solvent, to take down the oily-ness, but retain the effect, I notice things like that too, love looking at wood, especially when doing firewood, wishing I had a mill or something for some logs or pieces. I have some spalted maple that the guy behind the counter at the saw shop buys from me for blanks on the lathe, offsets the cost of what I buy there.

Haven't seen the top of mine for awhile- but its probably still ugly. I used particle board for a "temporary" surface when I built it 20 years ago, and of course, I haven't changed it yet.

Another method is to use new wood. Pressure wash it so it wears down like that. Then soak it in burnt motor oil. Rub it around and into all the cracks and crevices and in no time, it looks very similar. Done that to a couple of old dressers and they are now coveted antiques. But don't tell the women that bought 'em.

Workbench: A horizontal surface, used for misc. storage, piled higher and deeper until nothing can be added without something falling off!!

I walked gingerly past my workbench yesterday while I was welding a gate. If I bumped something just right, it could dump on me and hurt me. It's on top of my cleaning list for today, as it was yesterday, and the day before, and last week. . .

You've given me an idea! If I ever get it cleaned off, I think I'll take a picture of it and hang it on the wall above the bench.

My "workbench" is nothing more than an old hollow-core door sitting on top of two empty 55 gallon drums; and I haven't seen the top of it in over 20 years. LOL!

But that's gonna change as soon as I finish getting my NEW SHOP built.

I cleaned mine two weeks ago...first time in 3 years, and so far so good! nEAT THING IS I ALMOST FILLED UP MY BOLT BINS FROM THE CLEANING PROCESS.

Patrick HMD,

Very nice work bench. I bet you don't rearrange it very often... heavy stuff.

Steel top would be nice sometimes... husband has caught his on fire with the torch before.

(quoted from post at 13:53:20 02/06/14) My bench top is 5/8" plate. That makes for a different kind of patina.

Stay warm, and best regards
