Versatile 835

Looking for a second tillage horse. I am still partial to a JD 8440 preferably with a 50 series repower. The opportunity is coming on a couple of Versatiles that do not look too bad. How much fuel do they drink and how expensive are the major components when the time comes to rebuild or replace? Was PTO an option?

Versatiles were far more genetic/ off the shelf components. Much easier to source and much less expensive than Mother Deere parts.

Versatiles of that era were the cheapest to own, to run, and the easiest to work on. Plus the Cummins 855 is going to have way more low end torque then the JD 466. Problem is you are going to sacrifice some comfort and usability with them. The crash box tranny on those are not the easiest transmission to use. They were basically designed to be left in one gear all day long. Hydraulics are open center and just adequate enough to lift a plow. Not like the closed center system on a JD. If all you will be doing it tillage the 835 will be fine.

Simple, reliable tractors, but they won't run an air seeder unless they have an aftermarket hydraulic pump and reserve put on. Never seen one with a pto. An 835 is probably the best of the bunch if it hasn't been turned up a lot. Check the drivelines coming out of the differentials, make sure they don't have a lot of play. To shift you may have to turn the steering back and forth a bit to get the gears to mesh, they have enough lugging power that you can just leave it in one gear and go.

You can add a PTO to just about any of the Versatiles. May have to hunt some for the parts though,

Nephew bought my brother's Versatile 800 with turbo Cummins after he discovered that it would cost more to replace the clutch on hid JD 4WD than the tractor was worth. He really like the Versatile and can't believe how much he's saving on fuel alone.

Versatile has more power than his JD did and can work more acres in a day on less fuel. Fortunatley, he lucked out and found a buyer for his old JD (some fella that could only see the green paint).
