Shipping some hay

Finally moving some hay. It's about time, I was starting to get worried. I loaded three tractor trailers this week. Hopefully it keeps going so well. Only 8000 more to go!

I' getting $3.00 a bale loaded on the truck. Custom arranges for their own shipping. This was going to New Jersey. I had one go to Georgia last week. I'm in NNY.

I unloaded a semi load of compressed bales for a customer the other day with the skidsteer....1500# per unit. They have a machine that squeezes regular bales down to 20" or so. Units are about 42 x 48 with 18 bales shrink wrapped, no pallet needed. Customer is selling them for $9 a bale.

(quoted from post at 17:34:11 03/01/14) That machine that compresses the bales sounds neat. I got 672 on the truck. It was a 53 ft reefer.
I think you earned every bit of what you made. The gal I unloaded these for (and stacked two units high in her barn), said it was definitely worth the $65 I charged her.

I unloaded some "chaffhaye" for another gal about a month ago. This is chopped hay that is bagged wet with molasses added. 2000# on a wooden pallet...she paid $600 a pallet delivered from Texas. Looks like the latest scam.....

These bales had four half inch wide plastic bands holding each bale tight. They ship the compressed bales of high quality timothy and alfalfa to Japan from central Washington...these bales were rejects, I guess, so she got them a little cheaper.

oof - thanks for reminding me.

I got robbed last month on NY hay.

Friend of mine got 100 bales, I helped him stack it. I was a little short myself so I asked if I could buy 50 off the trailer too, since they had plenty left.

I said "assuming you're price is reasonable...".

The woman kinda talked in circles about it as we unloaded my 50 bales, but she kept avoiding actually telling me the price.

Got my 50 unloaded, and my wife paid her - I was thinking maybe 4.50 per bale if we're lucky, 5.00 if we're unlucky - 6.00 if we're getting screwed...

My wife came back over to me with steam coming out of her ears - $7.00 a bale! For first cutting, average size/weight bales that I knew everybody else was paying $3.00 for.

Didn't really want to re-load it at that point... I knew it was my fault for not demanding the price before unloading. And it was only 50 bales, so not the end of the world...

But man oh man - I've never bought 7.00 hay before. They were nice people, but I don't think I'll be doing any more business with them.

Where are you located that they get $7.00 a bale? By the time the people I sold to get it shipped they'd have to charge $5.00 to break even.

I sold ours last fall. Grassy horse hay (some was pretty poor, some was pretty good) for $4/bale. Delivery was extra, .50 local, .75 for farther away. The farther away one was a solid 150 mile round trip but she took 3 loads, and promised to be back next year. We'll see about that but they were a pleasure to do business with.

If I keep this going I'm going to have to start investing towards a good trailer. Last year I borrowed my boss's trailer because I'm just starting up and spent some money getting a truck then getting it ready to haul.
