Wheat Seed....

Alright, so I have been doing my research. I can buy a 50 lb bag of Hard Red wheat for about $25. OR Soft White for a little more, which do I want? Is one spring and one winter, or does it matter?

I think that I want Hard Red, just because that is what we have always had, and because from my research it stores a little better.

Mom has a bag of this stuff I found in the pantry, so I went to look at it, all it says is Hard Red, no spring or winter, sooooo does that me that I just need to buy a bag and test it when it gets here and hope that it's Spring, or what? Here is a link to the stuff I am thinking about...

That old stuff you have is chicken feed.Stop messing with it!Go buy fresh seed.It will list/specify the 'type'(spring/winter) and variety.Then you will KNOW what you have.It is foolish to plant that unknown.Good seed is the cheepest thing you can do.As has been said Winter must be planted in the fall(MUST have cold 'treatment' in order to mature).Spring must be planted in spring(it will winterkill).As was also said,if you want to raise some wheat for flour,go buy a hundred pounds from a farmer.Way cheaper/easier.If you want to raise wheat for the 'experience'/something new/for 'giggles'...... then go for it!Since you have indicated you have two fields,why not plant one field with new seed,the other with the old seed?Would make a good 'experiment'.I like experiments.I do things like that from time to time.Sometimes it works,sometimes it bites me-HARD.But If it doesnt cost (much) money,no big deal....Good luck,young Mr. Farmer.That's how we learn!Steve

From the link,I would bet with certanty that it is spring.They wont sell winter till fall.Or are they selling 'milling wheat',that is not intended to be planted....?

Looking at the link again,they are selling milling wheat for human consumption.That stuff is not intended to be planted.Go talk to a local farmer.He would probably GIVE you enough good seed for your plot.I know I would!

That is not seed wheat. That is milling wheat. Click the link to an actual seed company. Call them to see if they have a dealer in your area or if you can buy direct. If there is wheat grown in your area find out what varieties work good and plant those. If farmers are planting spring wheat they probably have seed saved from last years crop. That's what everybody does here. We seldom buy certified seed.
