Salt on Asparagus

Been wondering the same thing. I know Asparagus is a brakiest (sp) water type plant that likes a bit of salt but not sure when one should give it salt

Don't know exactly where you live but here in Northwest Iowa it might be best to wait a few weeks. Won't do any good till the grass and weeds start growing anyway. The early spring rains might dilute it before it's needed. Just my .02. Jim

Sautéed in red wine with mushrooms, onions and garlic, you really don't need any salt. But suit yourself- you may need to the salt to keep your blood pressure up to a respectable level. Me, not so much. . .

Last spring my wife put salt on the asparagus, the deer must of smelled the salt. They licked up all the salt and ate all the asparagus, now we have cages around it!

(quoted from post at 18:28:32 03/11/14) Deer eat all of my asparagus even without adding salt.

Lucky you!

As far as what to put up it when it raises it's ugly self, Roundup!

Thanks for the replies. FIL use to put salt on his and never killed it. I don't like asparagus, it's for the wife otherwise I in the same mind as oldtanker using round up.

That reminds me of a song from the Benny Hill show... They were singing "you put manure on your turnips?....we put cream on ours"..lol. Boy I miss that show.

You just have to remember that the salt isn't FOR the Asparagus, it's to keep the weeds down. Some plants are salt tolerant, but no plant "eats" salt that I can think of.

(quoted from post at 12:10:08 03/11/14) Is it OK to put salt on the asparagus now, or should I wait?

We've been using the salt trick for 2 or 3 years now. It DOES keep the weeds and grass out, and the asparagus seems to LIKE it as well. A healthy dose of fertilizer is also very beneficial. We use 10-20-20 because that is what's available at the farm store. We finally got our small patch to produce MORE than we can eat in just one meal.

As to when to apply the salt? Depends on where you live I guess. Nothing has even started growing here, so not much point in doing it yet. On the other hand, what would it hurt?

(quoted from post at 10:34:22 03/13/14) Asparagus is one of only perennial veggies. What is the other one?

Rhubarb. And horseradish, but some don't consider that a veggie.
