Spra Coupe 116

Still have a power issue on the coupe...I've replaced all inline filters - which helped...but RPMs are still low can't seem to get much more than 3000 to 3500...power problem at full tank going up hills especially...flat is not so bad, downshifting to first takes care of problem, but now I'm goin too slow and spraying at wrong pressure...I notice some minor load down while spraying...

Just not familiar with all the old carburator, governor, etc operation...It looks to me like I just need more throttle, but I'm maxed out and only around 3000rpms - seems low....Any ideas? I'll try to post some pics of whats there...I think its a mish mosh of parts....

Have you had this sprayer for very long? We have an old spray-coupe with VW engine, and with a full load (125 gallons) we never had enough power to take on slopes or soft ground. We abandoned it in favor of a pull-type sprayer. They improved them a lot on later models, but ours just didn"t have the power to do what we wanted. This hasn"t really helped answer your question, but I think they were underpowered to start with.

Yes - Ive had it about four years. The first year it had enough power to do everything needed - I was surprised...even thought I could go to 3rd gear sometimes but never did...then I replaced the generator and after that it seemed to lose the edge...I just seems I don't have enough RPMs 0 I think I should be able to get up to 4500 at max...

I just found out why...Its a non stock carburator and the hook up for the governor is wrong - that bent adj bolt should be striaight and that throttle should be on the opposite side and this unit (which my guy has seen before) bumps into the alternator to prevent any additional rpm's...

So I've get to get a new carb and a custom spacer to lift raise it up so it clears the alternator and then a new, nonbent rod and the former owner drilled out the proper gov hookup so I'll have to address that too...

He said IF it used to have enough rpm...it was just lucky...and luck ran out when I replaced the alternator...

Does the alternator move back as the belt is tightened? Longer belt?

If not, cut away just enough of the alt housing to clear the bracket.

GOOD to hear - I wondered about the carb and linkage. You should have plenty of power to pull her up any hills you come to - Thanks Mike

I thought of that, but the grind looks like it would be considerable...and the parts are not terrible and I'd have all my labor involved in taking the existing carb off and trying that sort of fix (Im 5 mo outta a huge back surgery...so I'd rather, if I'm gonna work, fix it right...

The new carb and spacer are around 250.00 - but the proper gov arm is also 250.00...nuts eh?

Read posts on other farm forums that it is better to junk the VW carb, too expensive to repair and/or find parts. Replace with a Weber carb and I believe also manifold. Perhaps this is what you already have. Conversion not cheap, perhaps $500 but works great.
