Old family farm photo

This was my Grandpa and Grandma's farm that they bought in the late 30's. 153 acres for $5000. Grandpa thought he could never pay for it, but had it paid for in 5 years growing cotton. This photo was taken about 1957 when the road was about to be paved, hence the equipment parked out front. My uncle told me they put 5000 bales of hay in that barn one time across the road. The terrace that starts behind the equipment and wanders around to the little road behind the house was a half mile long. My uncle and I planted Tate watermelons on it one year.
There is an old WPA outhouse out back and an old concrete building that housed the acetylene generator for gas lights in the house.
Oh, the good biscuits that I ate in that house.

I likeum old pictures of farms.

I'm glad you put the location of it.
I don't know why some people bother to post a picture and are "ASHAMED" to tell the "GENERAL" location of it.

thanks for sharing. i can still see my favorite uncles original farm in my minds eye. a tornado took out the barn and then a corner of the house a few years later back in the early seventy's. he rebuilt and retired in the late eighties. this time he moved the barn and house over about 30' so the tornado could go through the middle. it's worked so far. that's in mo. not far from Salisbury.

Kinda neat to have those old pictures. My cousin gave me this one. My Grandmother wrote on the back of it that it's the farm where she was born. It's down south of town, not in the family anymore, but still looks pretty much the same.

Richard, have you ever read "Red Hills and Cotton", by Ben Robertson? Great book, set in that time, in your part of the state..

No, I have not read it. I need to. It was written about farming around Six Mile in Pickens County I think.
