Dreaded oil question

Ok, not really. I've seen plenty of those over the years.

I was wondering if anyone had experience with Mobil Delvac? I remember it was on here a couple weeks ago but I don't recall the responses.

Orscheln has MD 15/40 for 47 bucks a bucket (mail in rebate). I always use Rotella. It is still 70 a bucket. It is actually cheaper to buy it by the gallon.

I usually figure that I should stick with what has worked, but is there really lots of difference between the two?

Both are good oils,I will run what ever is on sale as long as it is a name brand oil.
I rebuilt a mower years ago and it burned 1gt every time I mowed the yard, changed it twice and still burned oil. The I put in Pennzoil instead of Wal Mart brand, and it never used another drop.

Up until a couple of years ago we ran JD 15/40 oil in our 15 diesel engines on our irrigation wells. 8 Izuzu and 7 JD units. Most of them have 7000 to 8000 hours on them and most used about 1 gallon every two or three days. We switched to Delvac 15/40 and all but 2 use about a gallon or less in a week and one half and the other two use a gallon in 5 to 6 days. Made a big difference for us.

I don't have firsthand experience yet, but will after this fall. I plan to run Delvac 5W-40 in my new Western Star. There's a couple reasons I'm switching, first being I haul fuel for one of the Esso bulk fuel/lubes agents here in north central Alberta. The other reason was from what I've heard. One guy I know, his grandfather, father, and himself have always used Esso/Mobil products. Never blew an engine. The coal mine in Grande Cache, Alberta, ran Delvac for years with no issues. They switched a couple years ago when the fuel/lubes contract went to another supplier, and promptly knocked the engines out of 7 mine trucks within a week. They got things straightened away now, but it makes you wonder. I'm going to try it. I quit running Shell after I got thrown off 2 of their leases when I was running bush tankers. I have nothing good to say about their antics in the oil field. But that's a whole 'nother story.

My brother has his own over the road truck. He has used both Rotella and Delvac. He swears by Delvac saying he doesn't use as much oil using the Mobil oil. In my '05 GMC pickup, I used to use Valvoline. I now use Delvac. The oil pressure is better and goes longer before adding a quart.

We used Mobil Delvac exclusively in all of our equipment at the Mines in Death Valley,CA . Mobil also has an excellent testing program. They supplied us with sample bottles & pre-labeled and pre-postage paid cartons for the sample bottles. Every month we would pull a sample from every piece of equipment & send them in to the Mobil Testing Lab, where they would run an extensive battery of tests on each sample and then send us back the reports. Some of the tests would show whether we had any excessive changes in the oil viscosity due to heat or length of service time, so that we could adjust the time intervals between oil changes; percentage of dust/dirt in the oil; percentage of acids in the oil; amount & type of metal particulates to determine if we had a bearing(s) going out; contamination from antifreeze; etc. .

When I first got my 06 Dodge, the told me to pick one and stay with it. Delvac was on sale that week so that is what I went with. I know Rotella switched its formula a few years ago. Maybe they all had too?
I used to run Rotella in everything, and never had a problem with it either.
Oh, my Dodge has over 160,000 on it and doesn't burn a drop of oil. I would guess it has had a BIG trailer behind it 70% of its life too.

I've used Pennzoil for over 45 years; never had a problem with it. When I change oil in the Tundra, I put in 7 quarts instead of 6.5 quarts. It's down about a half quart when I drain it at 5,000 miles (120,000 miles on truck now).

However, I'm using Mobil 1 in the Camry and change oil at 10,000 miles, per Toyota recommendations.

The new oil probably removed years of deposites that the Delvac had left in the engines ORRRRR.......
Most folk seem unaware of the $$$ that can be made by printing up an expensive labeled oil brand on pails . Then filling the $$$ pails with cheapo oil.
The oil that "blew up" the engines may have been counterfeit and not the real thing.

I have a friend that's an engineer for a heavy equipment manufacturer. His employer spends a lot of money testing lubricants. Of course they have their own brand and he won't say who makes it for them but he speaks very highly of Delvac.
I recently bought two pails. With the rebate it was among the lowest priced oils at Farm & Fleet.
Another friend is a retired oil distributor. He carried several brands and is knowledgeable about the technical attributes of various brands of fuel and lubricants. He also speaks highly of Delvac.

as many have said about their brand, dealers/people,,,, just change oil and filter when needed, useing a good brand,,, and don"t switch around because it a buck or two cheaper, that buck may be needed to overhaul th motor because one brand may not do what it should have.. my .02
