More on Windows XP

Yesterday I had a computer guy come in and load Windows 7 on my old desktop. Put virus protection on and after a little learning time, I love it.
Cost me $190 including the 7 program.

I have been on 7 since my old XP machine went belly up 4 years ago. I have no gripes about it at all.

Windows 7 isn"t bad once you turn Aero off. You can even get classic shell to make it work like XP through explorer.

But unless they get rid of their new licensing arrangement on 8, I probably won"t be buying 9. I won"t pay money for something I don"t own, especially when it comes to my data. Not to mention all the online verification needed with 8. They forget how many of us live in the country with no access to broadband.

Still I use XP and Ubuntu at home.

Just bought my wife a new laptop with Windows 8 for $289. $190 is a lot of money to throw on an old machine just for software. But I guess what is important is what you want and if you're happy. Note that Windows 7 will NOT run all the same programs that XP does. Vista will. If you're lucky - you don't have any programs that can't handle the change.

Then you never need to look at Apple. They think that the machine you paid too much for still belongs to them. For that matter read the fine print on most software EULAs. The language and rules state in most cases that you own NOTHING and are only allowed to use THEIR PROGRAM for as long as they see fit. They usually also state that if they request you to return their software, you are obligated to do so at your own expense.

Which is why I don't buy Apple. There's plenty of open source software out there to do most things. Windows until 8 you actually own the software.

Got a new Dell touch screen laptop for wife with win 8.0

Really bad interface and buggy. Took dell a few hours to upgrade the software that makes a restore image on a USB drive. The software wouldn't recognize the USB drive but file manager would

Now I'm trying to upgrade to windows 8.1 to get the start button back and the store program says I don't have an Internet connection yet I can browse the Internet with IE. got on a chat session with Microsoft and the connection software timed out just as he was going to remote into the laptop

I was allways a pc guy even built a few so not a novice with computers

Lunix or the a Mac are really looking good at this point as Microsoft really layed an egg with this version

The IE interface is so bad it's almost unusable good thing Crome works on it

Touch screen is nice though

Have to spend a few more hours fixing a 3 day old computer.

Thanks dell and Microsoft

That is exactly why Microsoft stopped protection of the XP operating system, so you would buy their new software. (I'm not blaming you, just stating facts)

I read this using my XP home lap top and it reminded me to go grab my Ubuntu OS hard drive and slap it in and give it a try, and something very odd happened when I shut this guy down, I had 5 KBs waiting to be installed, and they installed before it shut down. I'm not happy with Microsoft's decision, but it is their software, we just lease it. XP has been very good to me over the years, and as of now, still is. Now, I'm going to grab my old IBM T30 that use use for work for applications that won't work with 7 or 8, and I'm going to slap the Ubuntu HD in it, go on line and see what it does. I'm curious how its going to react with printers and other peripherals. But before I do, I'll fire up the XP HD and see if one last set of KBs get pushed out to it like just happened on this one.

I hate to disagree, but if you read the EULA, Microsoft owns it.
You bought a license to install and use it. Nothing more.
That is the case with most any licensed software regardless of vendor.

I gave up on Microsoft, Took a long look at Apple and decided it's not worth the price for not even owning the programs.
I got Linux system and I'm happy with it.

"http://start.ubuntu.com/9.04/". This version is called the "Jaunty Jackalobe". Says that its "Linux for Human Beings". Loads with something called "Grub". What the heck, may as well go check out the links to the freeware stuff to see what is out there, what upgrades they have since this version is from 2009, at least thats how long the HD has been setting off to the side. Came loaded with Mozilla Firefox, and has some sort of built in spell check. Wow, where ever you right click, it pastes the last thing copied.

Jim,

I think you're confusing the computer "hardware" vs software.

Yes, most programs, you don't own the program, you're just buying the right to use it.

But, for the Apple computer, you do own the computer and can do anything with it. Same with any hardware, you own the computer/printer/etc. Maybe for your modem, you're supposed to use their service for a year, before you own it.

Glad you're happy with Win7. See, it didn't hurt to change.

One of my computers is 9 years old and running Win 7, it could run Win 8. You couldn't do that with a rotten Apple computer. From their own website to upgrade to 'Mavericks':
•iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
•MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
•MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
•MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
•Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
•Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

I just put Linux Mint on one of my son's 2006 Dell laptop. He didn't want to spend the money for Win 7 or 8, but either would have run fine. At least I can give him tech support for Linux.

I'm running Win 8.1 on this computer and I LIKE IT! It's my gaming box and is 7 years old!

It really bothers me that you don't have Win 8 on that nine year old computer.

Go across the road and yell at your neighbor that has a different color planter. He'll respect you I'm sure!

Feel better?

like said, we don't actually 'own' any licensed software.
Not even movie DVD's or music CD's if ya get technical.
Just 'renting' them with no return date.
Companies are extending this to hardware in some instances.
A Sony Playstation console is a good example.
The large 'purchase' price is just to have it physically in your home. Open the case for any reason and they will know, and your online access is over.....
(and updates are 'no choice'. Do them or your machine will not work at all)
Since they and others have got away with this, look for other companies to follow.

Yes but I'm still running a 10 year old Mac at home, bottom of
the line Mini. Not the newest OS on it but most everything runs
fine on them including XP installed with Virtual PC.

Its connected to the internet 24/7, still can surf anywhere one
pleases without virus protection or adware spyware stuff. Has
not slowed down over time.

My "brand new" Mac is 5 years old now and I've never bothered
to update the OS even though I could. It just works fine, still
feels blazing fast even though it was a bottom of the line model
too. I'm still on Word 2004 and don't like changing software
often.

Yes very familiar with it. Until windows 8 you owned the software license. Now you only own the right to install the software. There are many articles on it. I'm guessing you understand the huge legal differences in the US between the two things.
