skid steer problem

John Deere 575 skid steer 3 cyl diesel. This has been sitting
inside the barn with no use for a couple of years. Would like to
put it to use and can not start it. The battery is tucked on the
right side of the engine compartment down low behind lift arms.
So I tried jumping it of of a spare battery with no luck. I thought
the s.s. battery was so low it was interfering with charge. So I
removed the battery cables from the battery in the s.s. and put
the jumpers from my car to the cables. Can get it to spin but not
to fire. So Iim thinking a better battery with more amps than my
car is needed, problem is , i cant get the battery out with the lift
arms down. Any suggestions?

Does it have a hand fuel primer pump so you can preload the fuel system? If you could get it to run a little you can get the arms up.

Was just reading through my manuel and did not see a primer. It talks about bleeding the h2o seperator so I might try that, I may have get a new battery and use jumper cables I guess

You're going to need a new battery anyway, so buy the battery and connect it with real battery cables, not jumper cables, even if temporary.

When it is cranking, do you get white smoke? If not there is no fuel getting through the injectors.

Most likely there is air in the fuel system or no fuel getting to the injector pump.

Pull the fuel line off the injector pump and see if the lift pump is delivering fuel.

If it is, loosen the steel lines at the injectors and see if fuel coming there when cranking.

If it is, crank a few more seconds until the air is out, retighten them. It should start, maybe a stingy shot of ethier.

If it has glow plugs, be sure they work. Some have to be manually activated.

If you can get it to turn over you need to bleed the fuel lines. there should be a bleeder screw at the filter and then one on the pump.Jim

You HAVE TO HAVE good heavy Battery cables. So if you are jumping it you have to have heavy duty jumper cables. I have had to use two sets of cables one or Pos and one for Neg. Once you get a good fast turn over then work on the fuel. Becareful with glow plugs and starting fluid.

On most of those skit steers the batter will come out with the arms down....it's not easy, but it can usually be done. That said, a new battery and jumper cables aren't going to do you a bit of good unless the cables are at least as big as the battery cables currently going to the battery. In the end though bigger is better and if you can find a set made of at least 1-0, that ought to do just fine. That said insure that you completely disconnect the old battery as leaving it in the system will, basically, draw the new battery down to it's level. In other words a new battery hooked up 'remotely' with cables heavy enough to actually start the engine and you should be good.

As for ether, it has glow plugs DO NOT use ether. Using ether with operational glow plugs can create an explosion in the cylinder with enough force that it can damage the engine. Ether and glow plugs, intake heaters, or anything else like that simply DO NOT mix. Enough said on that.

Beyond that, I do this kind of thing for a living, and can say the rest of the advice given thus far is sound, and is pretty much what I would do if you were to ask me to come get it going for you. Good luck.
