Ford 2n Starter

Starter would not kick in, just spin. Took it off to check out. The starter base cap is cracked and the bearing is loose on shaft. From the looks of the starter, need a new one. Are the ones sold on ebay good? Mine has the large spring on the end.
Tractor is a 2n year unknown. Any help appreciated. i am new to this site, but have been getting tips and information to restore this old tractor. Thanks to everyone for posting such accurate info.
In-fact I could not have removed the starter so easily without the info on here.

Do you live near a town big enough to have a starter/ generator/ alternator repair shop? Might take it by, see what they have in their "resource" pile. Could be able to save it.

Ebay is a good source, just take a chance on what you get.

Like Steve said if you have a rebuild shop near by take it to them they may be able to fix it with some used parts and some new parts. If not this site sells one with the drive for around $130. I don't shop on Ebay so I can't speak for the ones on there. But I bet most of the new ones come from one or two different manufactures. take your time putting it back in as it takes a few tries to get it back in the bell housing and around the flywheel just don't force it. When you find the right spot it will fall right in. Finding that spot isn't always easy

To the best of my recollection, the 2n didn"t have a starter. You may have a 9n starter on a 2n.
They were originally the war time version of the 9n minus Battery, generator, starter and rubber tires.

Tractor seems to be a 9n. Has Ford on the plate at steering wheel with patent numbers. The rear is Ferguson System, large hubs. The serial number on the block is rusted off. I pressed the bearing back in with some lock tite. put the starter back on and it works, for how long??? Got it running, runs great, but has a "whine". I have been reading post and it seems to me that it is a transmission whine. Not sure.
Thanks to everyone that posted to help me. I restore cars and love old Ford Tractors, so thought I would restore this one as it is near original. Sit for years!! Rusty, red and grey, should be grey as I pulled the oil bath and it is gray inside bottom.

Your recollection is very close for the war time models Pat.
They also had a magneto instead of a distributor.
Not all 2N's were made that way though. Once restrictions
were relaxed Ford put the rubber and electrics back on them.
