? On Setting Up A Plow

Alright, so my neighbor finally broke down and bought a plow, it is a JD, 5 bottom, 16 trailed plow. I THINK it 3100?? But not sure...

It has three wheels, and is trailed, rather than semi mount...

They have never plowed with this type of setup, and have enlisted my "help"....

They THINK that their Ford 5000 is going to pull this thing around like it isn't even back there, I think that it MIGHT dink around with it, but that their 8000 would be a MUCH better choice!!

Sooo, either way, what ever tractor they end up using, when I hook up the plow, should I set it so that the tractors right wheels ride down in the furrow like all of the old tractors do, or should I set it so that both the left and right sets are up on un-plowed land?

I'll try to find a picture of what the plow looks like online, but I think you guys should get the picture good enough to answer the question!!! THANKS, Bryce

First you determine if its an 'onland' or a furrow plow.Set it up accordingly. If its 'onland, leave the tires as they are.If its a 'furrow',set the wheels to the proper width.I would immagine that a plow such as that will make even the 8000 'grunt'.

Might be a 3200. I have one and it does a nice job. If that's what it is you can set the hitch up for in furrow or on land. Won't have enough room for duals on land though. Tell them to get on ebay and buy a manual. Tells you all you need to know. They're 5000 isn't gonna pull it. Mine is a 5-18 set up and it's all my 115hp jd 4320 wants traction and power wise.

This is basically what the plow looks like. I got to doing my math, and I am starting to think that there is NO WAY in He!! that 5000 is going to pull the plow....

The 8000 on the other hand has weights and fluid in the tires, however hasn't even been started in over a year.... They claim that they quit using it because it started exploding the oil filter off the side of the engine every time you would rev it up a little above idle...

They did a red neck type of rebuild on it, and it did run REALLY STRONG, IF you could keep the filter on it.... I am supposed to start plowing ground Thursday, we shall see!!!

By the look of this plow, I will probably just set the tractor so that the right set is in the furrow.... Sound O K?? Bryce

I think the only way that 5000 is going to pull that 5 bottom is in sandy soil at about 3 inches deep. (downhill) lol! If they plow 10-12 inches deep in heavy soil the 8000 is gonna have to get down and snort, too.

We have REALLY rocky soil where this field is, and we will probably only run in about 4 inches, but that might even be too much... Have to wait and see!

I'll be sure to get some pictures! Bryce

5000 Ford 4-14" was full load. Was semi-mount plow and to get draft centered correctly left wheel was set on 60" centers with a dual, right moved out to 76" center. That put the center of the dual about equal to right wheel. That plow size could be either a in furrow or a on land style, need to get parts manual to know what you have. Need to drop off 2 bottoms for that 5000.

(quoted from post at 21:41:12 04/26/14) We have a JD 3200 6x18 that will work a 4840 in heavier ground.

Big difference between a 157 drawbar HP tractor and a 50 drawbar HP tractor.

I'm running a JD 5-16 in sandy loam about 6-8" behind a 100 drawbar HP tractor and it's ok. I've plowed, a long time ago with a 50 HP tractor and a 4-14. Tuff ground would really make that tractor snort. Same plow behind a 65 HP tractor was a pleasure to plow with.
