1963 massey 35 two stage clutch?

Neighbor split his massey apart to replace tranny seal. Yesterday, he asked me to rewire it. Did a test by bumping the starter, at which time the clutch dropped and hit the floor board.

We ran out of time; had to call it a day. What would cause the clutch to change because the engine turned over? Neighbor is hopping he doesn't have to split it apart again.

I told him I have a 4 rule policy. It usually takes me 4 attempts to get things back together and he is only on his first.

Maybe he just forgot to tighten the bolt that clamps the clutch pedal to the shaft and the jolt of the starter was enough to jar the pedal loose and drop. Or maybe the set screws on the throwout bearing carrier inside where not installed or tightened allowing the shaft to slip in the carrier. Need to split again to fix that.

Jay, you win a prize. Neighbor put the throw out
bearing in backward and the part of the clutch lever
was also in backward. Started at 9:30 split the
tractor. Finished up at 3:30. Neighbor was happy.
