Finger type vs. carosel transplanter?

I Know they are used for veggies too. We use a MT brand Trans planter to set tobacco, and had a lot of trouble with it this year. I would like to up grade to a 2 row next year. What are the pro and cons of both. The neighbor has trouble getting the rows to close with his, but this may be a brand thing. Thanks in advance John

We switched to a Carosel from finger type soon after we started using float plants, also it takes fewer people. I am not sure I understand your row width concerns, the setters are 40" apart on the frame, the rest is no different than a single row. I have used a neighbors 4 row and that will plant some tobacco and fun to move on county roads. We keep the finger type for tomatoes etc. but haven't used a single row in more than 20 years.

will a carousel drop bare root plants, I know they are the best by far with plants having a root ball

Here in the land of the worlds largest sauerkraut plant most of us started with the finger type planters and grew our own plants, now almost all growers use the carousel type MT planters with planters in size of 6 to as big as 12 row planters set at 30" to 36" row spacing. If you are referring to plant spacing with the finger type you can change that with different size sprockets on the drive chain. Our sprockets were a plastic type material and they are available from Mechanical Transplanter if that is the make of your planter.
