Hilly terrain

Looking for a tractor to pull a 10' mower on hilly terrain. I am using my neighbors kubota 4200? and feel uncomfortable following the terraced ground around the pasture. My farming buddies have a lead on IH 766 and 966 tractors, but they seem too big for the chore, although the wheelbase can be set very wide for stability. I am looking for something used and stable on steep ground. I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Bill

check all the local golf courses, if they don't have any tractors they are planning to get rid of, they would know where to find some. you would have to try hard to roll a course mowing tractor.

You could consider a ford 2000 or 4000 series, LCG with the wide tires, I don't see how you could turn one of those over, well anything is possible, but that is what these were made for, 2110, 4110 I think are the models of those, here's a link to the 2110. Proven thousand series design in an LCG, hard to figure how you would go wrong with one of these.

No matter what tractor you choose, it should have ROPS AND you should have the seat belt on!

Safety rant over.

Low and wide. You don't want an ag tractor, you want a low deal, utility type or even special mowing machine.

Are you finish mowing, or rough brush hog mowing? Or cutting hay? How big a spot?

Seat belt and roll over structure.

I've noticed that rear tractor tires with shallow 23 and 30 degree angled bars will slide sideways easier than tires with steeper 45 degree bars.

Reduced speed and operator caution are probably the most important factors to prevent rollovers.

Ribbed front tires, wide rear wheel stance, and low center of gravity also help for stability on side hills. Fluid filled tires lowers the center of gravity on most tractors.

Just look at what the highway road crew in your area uses. In my area they use 4630 NH, TN70 NH and 62xx(?) JD. I use a 4630 Ford on a 12' cutter but most of my slopes aren't that bad.

I hay some extremely steep ground with an IH 826. wheels are widened out- tractor just fits in the 9 ft 3 in last pass of the discbine. I'm talking fields where the square bales roll off the hill. When it is REAL steep, you want a tractor with weight. a discbine, haybine or baler will scoot a little lightweight tractor off the hill.
