Speaking of steak

There was an article in the paper here awhile back about a butcher who worked on wall street but then got into the family meat store bus and he is very old school ; like he wears a tie and white shirt under his butcher apron. Everytime I go through that town I look for his shop. He has a 29 dollar steak that ain't even cooked yet. Ha I gotta try that even if he is screwing me.

Last year Mom wanted me to take a short vacation with her. We went to San Antonio and had a great time. She wanted to go to Little Rein(sp) Steakhouse which is on the Riverwalk.

I knew the prices were going to be bad when they weren't printed on the menu and every thing was separate.

I ordered a rib eye, a baked potato and a soft drink. Mom ordered a salad. The steak was average size and was good, but didn't knock my socks off.

The bill for the two of us was over $100. The steak alone was $42.00. We won't make that mistake again.

My wife gets embarrassed because when I get a menu like that I always ask the waiter if they have financing available. Sometimes you have no choice like your going to a concert and go to the closest restaurant and then it's too late once you are seated.

I always embarrass my wife and adult kids when we go to a fancy restaurant where the bubbly often well endowed twenty something waitress comes up and smiles and spouts out the corporate dictated phony slogan "HI IM MERCEDES AND I"LL BE YOUR SERVER TONIGHT" (Ima thinking well aint that just great lol I never would have guessed)

To which I respond "Well hello, I"m John and this is my wife Julie and we will be your customers tonight" Then I go on to ask them something like "So, are you willing to trade money for food and drink here, or what"s the deal"

I tell my kids its our money and tip they are after and if they don"t like my attitude I will take my business elsewhere and they can kiss my grits

John T Just an old grouchy fuddy duddy and so happy and proud to have reached the place in life where I don"t give a _ _ _ _ what Mercedes thinks about me. Don"t get me wrong I enjoy going out and sure, leave a good tip if deserved, but I get so sick of the phonies and corporate dictated lines and sales pitches GIVE ME A BREAK

On our New Orleans trip last January we made the mistake of going to a place like that. No prices on the menu, but what ticked me off was when I was told my hat with the Special Forces and Airborne logo was inappropriate in their restaurant. We left.

my mom took me to a place called " black angus " years ago in copertino, ca. there wasn't any prices on the menu, but i wasn't buying. i used to be a cook for a living, so im a cook, and when i say it was good, it was good !!! everything, it was like an 8 course meal. im a cheapskate, but this is one time that price would have been a non issue.

dr sportster, ,WalMart Is In No way, Shape, Form, Or Fashion a Place to buy a quality cut of Beef. Period! I do not care what fancy packaging they put it in it is little of paper thin cuts, cook in nothing flat, No Taste. Had this same discussion today at one of my local Meat Markets Butchers, Spent $100 to get quality meat not some cut off a tough, stringy, grass fat calf!
Great Steaks can be obtained from a lot of good Independent Butcher shops and Meat Markets! All across this Nation, Getting a well marbles cut of meat and cut NO Less that 1 in thick,,,preferably 1.25+ in thick. for grilling.
*** Season with your favorite seasonings,Both sides!
***Let Stand, bring to room temp!! 2 to 4 hrs!
***Grill normally as you would any Fine cut of Meat to your desired done-ness. Anything over Med Rare and it is ruined IMO, Not fit to eat, pitch it to the Dogs!!!!! For Me... Knock its Horn Off
Wipe it A$$, Show it a fire! and Serve it to Me! Hot!

When I worked at an ice cream parlor in college they also had a waitress who was a total babe, blond hair, big You Know Whats, etc.

Sometimes she would bet us that she could get so and so much of a tip from a customer. It was amazing to see her pour it on...but she always got the tip. She could spot them as soon as they walked in the door.

Never and let me repeat NEVER would I ever go to a restaurant and order a steak from a menu and not know the price. Have traveled all over the US,that would not happen

I worked with a guy ,told the story "out west" I don't rember what state any way cattle country. His In laws took he and his wife out for dinner. Everyone ordered steak, when it was served, waitress asked "do you want anything ?" Bob told her she 'forgot" the steak knives. Her answer was " Sir if you need a knife, let me know and I will bring you another steak."
Bob told me was the best he had ever eaten.

Decade or two back, was in Austin, TX on business for a couple of weeks. Went down to 5th street to drink beer and party with college chicks, and stumbled onto some steak house on the second floor over one of the night clubs. It was pretty posh. I ordered a porterhouse, so some guy came out with a slab of beef on a cart, waving his butcher knife back and forth along the length and asked me to tell him where to stop to make the cut. I don't remember what it cost, but was expensive and worth every penny. Up to 1" thick, sirred 10 seconds on each side. Over 1" thick, 20 seconds on each side. You stab your fork into a good steak, it better go "Mooooo" and try to kick the platter off of the table.
