My 45 H was running fine while blading my road , then engine would die , would restart and run for a bit , then die again. Thought it might be the carb, took it apart and cleaned it , put new gas in it , it will start then die right away. It will flood right away if it doesn't start, have always had that problem with it. Wonder if it might be electrical problem or something with carb adjustment ?

Sounds like a blockage in the fuel line or tank. I had that
trouble it took forever to get it cleaned out. Also could be water
drain the carb bowl next time.

lakemac45, don't be so hard on yourself, you're not an idiot, you're just ignorant! Now, before you feel insulted, ignorance is merely a lack of knowledge. The fact that you asked advice shows that you're no idiot. That being said, your problem may be compound, since, as a tractor ages, the electrical system components deteriorate, (unless you are one of those rare people who stay on top of all needed repairs), So you could have some weak spark as a result. Most ignition problems result in a go/no-go situation, except for a bad coil which can fail and once it has cooled down will run until it gets hot again, then shut down again. If it starts right back each time it dies, then it sounds like a fuel problem. Since you have already been into the carburetor, I would, as Walt suggested, drain the float bowl into a container, let it run about a pint of gas and let it settle. Any trash or water should be apparent. The flooding condition maybe caused by improper float adjustment, or the needle simply not seating as it should. Just a few thoughts.

Only use the choke for a second, then push it in or it will flood (they all do). As far as stalling, probably what Walt says, dirt/rust/varnish/bugs/whatever from the gas tank blocking the outlet at the bottom of the tank or the strainer under the tank or the screen where it enters the carb.

Check for a good flow of gas dribbling out the float valve when you have the carb bowl off.

The previous owner of my 1950 H never bothered to fully tighten the nuts on the terminals of the on/off switch. It did exactly the same as yours until I finally gave up and closely inspected the entire system. Once I found the problem, it took about 2 minutes to fix it.

I have this problem in the past< I drained the tank, by taking down the gas bulb and put a short pice of copper gas line in the top of the gas bulb and putting the gas bulb in the tank and hooking up the gas line.PROBLEM SOLVED
JR FRYE SAID THAT HAVE A GREAT DAY

It was the on /off switch that was the main problem . Put a new one on and it runs great . That was after I cleaned the carb, drained the old gas, replaced the sediment bowl with a brass fitting and petcock, new fuel line with an in-line filter, cleaned and blew out the bugs in the oil bath cleaner screen, and put new plugs in it. It needed all those things done anyway, runs better than it has in quite a while. Thanks for the help , fellers !
