So I live in Iowa and rule is have 30 days to license my truck I just bought only problem is I'm gonna be outta town week days for five weeks for work, what's the penalty if I wait longer than 30 days, I have title just need to turn it over into my name, I could change date on title for purchase date as I bought it from my brother, will post pictures when I take some.

Because there's a 30 day limit, wondered what penalties are when you go over the 30 days

I'm outta town for more than month for work no way to license it, I might change date of sale though be best bet.

Will you be driving the truck or will it be parked at home. I suspect the penalty is ONLY for DRIVING an unlicensed vehicle. If you get stopped driving the truck after the 30 days has passed, then it might get expensive fast.

Try calling you local DMV, explain your situation, and ask what your options are. If you offer to pay the license fees now, they might let you complete the rest of the paperwork when you get back, or they might let you take care of it through the mail. Every jurisdiction is different, most will work with you if you are pleasant and after they have your check. Did I mention they need to have your check? Once they have your check then things can start to happen.

Good luck and enjoy the new truck.

Here there is a penalty they add. It continues to acrue with time. It is still small town so they often just overlook it. I have a trailer I realized I forgot to tag in February. It is just sitting. I'll just wait until August when everything else gets tagged.

In Nebraska, the penalty is for not paying the sales tax, which is paid at the county treasurer. They get all kinds of bent if its not paid in 30 days.
I would change the purchase date.

Do what 504 suggests, go to license office on lunch break in the town/county where you will be working.
OR- have a friend/family member take the title & payment to local office.Willie

The only way you will get anything close to the proper answer is to contact the DMV in the state you want to register it in. Ask you questions, write it down and the name of the person you talk to and where they are located, what dept. There may be a simple and easy way to do it.

Asking a question like this on this forum is going to get you answers that range from may be right to dead wrong. DMV is the only place to get the right answer. I can tell you that as far as I know based on over 20 years of police work that if you go past the date they give, it's an unregistered vehicle IN MY STATE. Yours may differ. Talk to DMV!

Sign the form and let someone else do it. I did a vehicle in MI for my brother in CA a few months ago. The truck was in CA, but I titled and plated it in MI for him and had the DMV mail the plates and title to him.

Changing a date on an official document is called falsification. In most places it could be a serious offense. Other places maybe not. As said before, ask at the correct place - the state DMV. Answers you get on this forum won't stand up in court <grin>.

I'm not driving it I have my 1979 dodge sitting at work at srt10 and Powerwagon at home in shed

I'm still in Iowa but don't get enough time at lunch to do it only get a half hour, and when we aren't around where we work we don't take any more time off than thatno exceptions and courthouse is 30 mins away from where we are

In KY there are no fees when transferring a used vehicle from immediate family members. My sister and I swapped the same car back and forth 3 times. She finally traded it to a dealership.
