Going out to flip some ground.

Just 100 acres. But I gotta get 'er turned under quick. It will be time to plant in three weeks.

Allan

3 weeks, eh? Climate cooler there and you can get it done. Too hot still in 3 weeks here in SC, we could get away with planting wheat in 5 weeks, but can wait until Thanksgiving if need be.

This is my neighbor's plow; I've never even hooked to a one-way plow before (I come from an irrigated farm background and have always used spinners).

He said 25 years ago, they pulled it with a 1370 Case, but it just worked the livin' snot out of it.

I'm sure my tractor will handle it okay, just concerned about tying the tires to the ground. I've got three sets of iron weights plus fluid.

Allan

Goin to make for a tough day pulling that with your tractor. A 1370 is a tough act to follow. My uncle pulled 8-18's with a 1270 case but only at 4.5 mph because they had rocks. He also had table top flat fields. I doubt HP will be a problem, but getting it to to the ground might be. Let us know how it goes.

Central IL does not know what a plow is anymore. Way to many bottoms and no cutters for around here. Not enough tires on the ground.

I would think 8X18's eight inches deep behind a non front assist tractor would be almost a no-go even in your soil. I'm gonna be going right past your north door on HWY 20 on Thursday but we won't have time to stop by to see the action. Darn!

That is a nice tractor and plow you've got I'm glad to see somebody still farming instead of using spray as the answer for everything

We had to plow wheat stubble the second or third day after cutting, because the ground would get hard right now. Need some pictures of that plow in the ground. Around here you would be way short on tractor. Weather man in Topeka just said we are 8 inches of rain behind for the year. Crops are hurting.

I've got way more drawbar horsepower and heavier, but am turning bigger tires, so that is gonna be a bit of a drawback.

We'll see how it goes.

Allan

Oh heck,

When this plow was built, 4x4's were almost unheard of.

I can give ya directions if ya wanna stop by and give 'er a few rounds. :>)

Allan

Good luck with that big plow...and no counters?? What"s the deal there?? Gonna leave a pretty sloppy landslide I would think. Cmore

I would imagine that's going to give the tractor a workout, even in stubble... Should make pretty short work of 100 ac tho if you can make 4 mph with it. Mabey 3 days?

Rod

I agree. At 4 mph it should take about 22 hrs of seat time to plow 100 acres. I wonder how much fuel it will take to plow 100 acres 8 inches deep.

I have pulled a 12 X 24 Melroe plow before. Course I had a 976 Versitile tied on to the front of it.
You'll be fine, but I bet until you get it scoured up, you are gonna slip a tire, and maybe blow some smoke.
I will make the trip out to watch, if it goes to raining here.

I think you'll be fine if you can get her hooked. Might take a pile of weight. I don't think you'd pull it too well in sod tho from what I remember of some of the pics you've posted in the past..
We run about half as much plow on a 75 hp tractor and we could get by with 60 horse if we wanted to drive slow enough so long as the grip was there... but it tough conditions it wouldn't happen.

Rod

YEah, that's in range. I ran the numbers at about 20h but my original wag was for about 25 hours. I usually plow about 2 ac hour with half as much plow, mounted. You can some efficiency with mounted plows but lose a lot working in small dog patches... Imagine Allan's got some nice open fields to work in :)

I'm thinkin right about 8 gph should feed the old girl so that's only 175 gal.

excuse me
from the factory

ih 5488 163 drawbar horsepower
case 1270 109 drawbar horsepower
case 1370 131 drawbar horsepower

Even a 5288 IH has more db hp than a 1370 Case plus IH is heavier, has more transmission speeds, likely bigger tires than 1370 Case from the factory.

I was wondering if someone was going to point that out.

The 5488 is a very fair sized tractor. Our family only had one for a VERY short time to replace a turned up 1586 which it did with no issues. Had it less than a year and moved up to a 7140 - now that was a horse of a tractor. Given the farm economy we pretty much went from the 66 & 86 series to the Magnums and skipped most of the offers in between.

And what we did get almost all came in June while I was trying to put up some brome hay that I could advertise as put up dry.
