Internet usage...again

What types of anti virus software have ya'll had success with?

I'm stumped about my Verizon usage. I get internet through a Jetpack. Last evening, from 5pm to 11pm, my computer was turned off completely, the Jetpack was on, and my wife's computer was turned on but she never logged on to the 'Net.

We showed .448, or almost half, of a gig usage for those 6 hours.

I still haven't figured out what's going on. I called Verizon's tech support and got a gal who was only marginally fluent in English. Nothing was resolved there, but I will say in her defense she gave me 1 gig free usage.

My next step will probably be to go to Verizon's main store in Lincoln. I can predict things will escalate there to a point where I get thrown out of the store.

As of now, I have no idea if it's a virus somewhere, someone hacking into our service, or what. We have no neighbors within range of the Jetpack.

I get my internet thru AT&T, a dsl line. I was having problems with it, some gal in Little Rock, a former police officer, fixed it for me. Just last night.

Where did you see the half a gigabyte usage? On your Jetpack's logs or from Verizon? In most cases, the usage reported on the service provider's site is delayed, so it's not surprising if it reported usage when you were offline. As I said before, you need to log into your router (the Jetpack) and look at its logs. That will tell you the actual 4G usage and which hosts are connected to it. It may even tell you the usage per host. Get your facts in order before you go make a scene at the store.

Have U-verse from At&t plus Norton anti-virus. Pay a flat rate per month for At&t and annual rate for Norton.

Use AVG anti-virus, seems to do it. You can get temporary internet files implanted behind your computer file name. (My computer had to have a name assigned to it when new) Some refer to these files as apps which run concurrently with your machine while you are using it. Temporary files may be a form of virus or malware. Someone said you may be able to remove these temp files without harm to the computer, I don"t know if that is true or not. My antivirus software generally catches those files and deactivates them. I would be careful about blowing a fuse at verizon unless I knew my computer was clean of viruses or unwanted apps running continously.

I never used it until my last computer was eaten from the ground up last November. Never found out what did it but I lost a lot of stuff. Seems like all these AV software companies are very aggressive and once the product is on your computer it is difficult to get rid of if you do not like it. This computer came with Norton and I did not like it and uninstalled. It still tells me every single day that I need to update Norton. I bought a package from AVG and it seems to do a good job. No problems as of yet.

You can look for evidence of malware without installing new antivirus.

Task Manager will allow you to view all the processes running on the machine. Look for those which are using a lot of CPU, and those which you don't recognize. You can also monitor network activity in real time.

The netstat command will tell you a great deal about the PC's network activity. It has many options that can be used in combination to get different reports. "netstat -h" will tell you all the options.

If you want to get real serious about monitoring network activity, consider loading Wireshark. https://www.wireshark.org/ Wireshark can capture every byte traveling in or out your network connection. Note that it creates very large capture files, so you can't use it for more than a few minutes at a time. Interpretation of the network capture files requires some knowledge of networking protocols.

if you want good, free antivirus and anti spyware software, go to ninite dot com. look under the heading SECURITY, then click on the boxes for avast, malwarebytes, spybot 2 and Super. then below that is a big green box that says GET INSTALLER. click on get installer and it will automatically bundle and down load all those on to your system. follow the prompts and when installed, run each with full scans. you will amazed at how much junk is on your system. friends son is a computer guru and he uses this site for free software. its run by geeks and it is a safe site.

I get mine through Hughes satellite 4G and use the award winning Bitdefender with my XP old desktop. It has worked very well for me. The only problem with upgrading to the 4G was that the dish had to be adjusted about 8 degrees west which put the signal into a bunch of trees . I had to go on a hackfest with my buddys bucket truck, and now I have a lot more firewood.

cool down and take a chill pill. No need getting all stirred up over it. Maybe your wife's computer was downloading updates. They do that without much sign. Or maybe your jetpack was downloading something it thought it needed. I have quit using any antivirus software cuz they were always running and doing things on their own. Now I rely on my browser to protect me and have selective startup with all unnecessary junk turned off.

The thing is, there are 8 days left in this 30 day period, and we've used 11 gigs.

We're on an 8 gig plan, and a year ago we seldom used over 6. Our equipment and habits haven't changed. In fact, a month ago I quit doing the insurance inspections, I don't use my own computer a fourth as much, and the usage still keeps going up.

There's a screw loose in the campaign somewhere.

Dave H (MI):

A lot of these Internet Security programs REQUIRE that you use their own proprietary removal tool to remove their programming - Norton is one of them.

I also had Norton & didn't like it (too much other junk bundled with it.)and I did as you did and uninstalled it, with the same results as you.

Here's what you have to do to REMOVE Norton: Go into your Browser and type: "www.Symantec.com/nrt/"
This is the NORTON REMOVAL TOOL .

Awesome, thanks! I ran that and it seemed to take off a lot of files. Rebooted...now we will wait to see what it asks me for down the road. I'm feeling maybe that is one less thing popping up on my screen every day!

Best Buy or Staples may be able to assist you with answers to your questions before contacting your internet provider.

I'm glad that it worked for you; I know that it certainly worked for me.

Have a GREAT day!

I've been using Avast free for 12 years. No problems. Now im playing with linux and absolutely love it. No AV needed.

I've used Kaspersky on a recommendation from a friend was was our IT guy at work. Last time I went to renew Kaspersky on line they would only do it with an automatic renewal. Since then I've used ESET NOD 32, mostly because of an advertisement on a talk radio show I liked (computer topic show)

I use AVG free and have been using it for years with no problems. It has on occasion caught and quarantined a virus. I also use a Verizon Jetpac and have had no real problems with mysterious usage at this point.
