tire advice

I ordered a rear tire for my Super A. It was listed as good used tire and indeed the tread is almost new. But the bead has a few spots where the rubber is torn away from the cord. Before I spend more money I thought I would ask if you all thought it was worth using or just a future headache.

Thanks
Richard

Damage to the bead generally is from the tools used to mount and dismount, and not indicative of the condition of the whole tire. Should not be a problem, but I would use a tube, of course.

Thats what happes when dismounting somtimes.
From the picks, Id indeed say you have a Good, used
tire, that is still usable, and if tread and sidwalls are
good, you'll be fine. The spots shown in the picture
will be hid by the rim, and you will forget about them
soon enough. As pointed out, Id use a tube too,
though Ill add Id be sure to buy a BRAND NEW TUBE.

Thanks, I do plan to use a new tube. Is it beyond reason to try to swap this tire myself? I would like to get the old tire off and clean and repaint the rim without 2 trips to the tire store.

I recently purchased 2 new tires 6x16 8 ply. It was
well worth $10 each for tire barn to mount them and
remove the old ones. 8 ply tires and a 6 inch rim
would be impossible for me. I go past the tire barn
any how. So on the way home I dropped them off and
Picked them up the next morning.

Hi If you got the tools to do it and half or
more brains, you should be ok as long as it
don't have fluid ballast in the one coming off
and the one going back doesn't need it to. Then
you got a Pain in the butt pumping it out and
putting it back.

Then every cent of paying the tire shops worth
it and the 2 trips lol.
For the tube buy a proper rubber tube not one
of these made in China rubbish synthetic things
you can near see through it's so thin. It won't
be long before you see made in China print
again. they last about 20 mins if your unlucky
and you get flats.
Our local tire shop only sells Klieber tubes
now due to so much hassle with the cheap thin
plastic/synthetic type tubes. he told me this
after I repaired a cheap tube twice in 2 months
he fitted, Before he realized there was a
problem with what he was selling before.
Like others said that bead should be fine, I
got worse I put on my tractor here. Just make
sure the wires in the bead aren't rotten or cut
through. Thats one time you would get a problem
or if the bead is separating from the tire
wall.

Is it worthwhile changing it at home? If you must ask, probiby not. On the other hand if you know what you are getting into, ask if the shop will discount their labor if you bring the wheel in clean without tire on it. I at least break the bead if a wheel is border line rusted. I can be more carful and use more finess to avoid ruining the rim.
Normaly it's worth twice what a tire shop charges.

Those breaks in the rubber are minor; I've had
far, far worse on tires that I've used at highway
speeds. The damage is caused by someone NOT using
Tire Lube when they dismounted the tire & the
mount/dismount bar on the tire machine snagged the
rubber. If you're concerned about those spots
leaking air, it's easily fixed by applying some
black "Liquid Rubber" to those spots (thoroughly
clean the areas FIRST). And if you're still
concerned after applying the Liquid Rubber, put in
a tire tube and you're good to go. I've done this
many, many times on highway tires.

That brings up another question. It is the right rear and does have water. The left rear does not have water. Since this I am restoring this SA for the hell of it and not working would it be cool to leave out the water? Also, I have looked at a new tube at yesterdaystractors and steiner. Are these considered good tubes?

Yes leave the fluid out especially if the other rear tire is dry

This is the right rear and it does have water. The left rear does not. I am rebuilding this SA for the hell of it not for work. Would it be cool to leave out the water or would it be too off balance?

Structurally it's not going to hurt the tire... today. What will happen over time... the wire is going to corrode. If I didn't own the tire I'd probably endeavour to never own it... but if I already had it.. I'd just get a big tube of black silicon, cover it over good, let it set up... and mount it. Silicon will buy some time. Chances are, if you don't work the thing hard it's never ever going to matter.
