It might be a bit early, with bow season opening next week, but if anyone would like to go on a good old fashioned rabbit hunt with dogs, let me know. I have four litter-mates that run pretty well and a year-old that is opening on track and staying with the pack. I'm familiar with a lot of the land in the Flat River SGA, but would go anywhere below the bridge or south. Dogs have never run snow shoes, but I'm sure they would. E-mail [email protected].

I may give you a call Once we get some snow I can tell how many snowshoes there are this year. It seems they just get started and the yotes get thick and wipe them out.

I love bunny hunting, isn't it better with a little snow on the ground? I'm not that far from the Flat River SGA, know the biologist pretty well.

Well last year we had plenty of snow on the ground and the running/gunning was horrible. Lots of 30 yard chases right to a hole. Dogs don't care if there's snow or not. Last week I had a nice 45 minute run in a bean field. Rabbit started on my side and ran to the neighbors. Most rabbits will run a circle but this one just didn't want to come back to my side. Finally had to call the dogs off as it was getting warm. This afternoon we had a rabbit run a big circle out about 200 yards and came back right where the dogs jumped it. Hope some of us can get together. Love that beagle music!!!!

Have you ever hunted snowshoes? They don't hole up the way cotton tails do and in Jan and Feb they may take off out of the country but will always circle back. I use to hunt cotton tails not far from where you live. There is nothing like the sound of dogs running. We have a lot of bears dogs hear and you can hears them a long ways off

Just don't go over the mackinaw bridge. Know a guy from Ohio that lost 9 out of 10 dogs in 2 hours one morning to wolves. He saw the wolves when he was looking for his dogs when they weren't making any noise. Said he would never go to the U.P. again!

Ryan;

Yes, I heard wolves are especially thick around Strongs and Trout Lake.

Ivan;

Only hunted snow shoes once. Lots of fun but big circles.
