Verizon High Usage Revisited

Posted this on tool talk too, but in case someone misses it there....

For those of you who remember, there were several posts a month or so ago by myself and others who had been hit by super-high overuse fees by Verizon internet.
Thought I would update here... I did the thing that was going around and shut off the streaming video option on facebook and it seems to have helped a LOT.

Now, I'm not sure if it actually was the facebook video thing alone or if Verizon got some pressure to quit overcharging, but either way my usage has been cut WAY down.

I have a 10GB per month plan, and before I was supposedly using two or three GB per day, and naturally went way over the 10GB, causing huge overuse fees....

But I shut off the Facebook videos not quite a month ago, and as of right now, my usage shows 6.28GB in the last 28 days.

So, whatever it was, it's fixed now.

I don't think there's any doubt Facebook was the culprit, although Verizon could have been more helpful in pinning down the source of your high usage. (Doing so would have exposed how much they really know about your internet activities.)

Of course, Facebook isn't the only site that pushes videos; many of the news sites do as well. It's really stupid on their part, since it just makes their web pages that much slower to load.

I dont remember for sure the sequence, but do a google search for fb streaming videos, I saw the process on alot of different sights. I just followed along on one of these to turn it off...

In a nutshell you go to your fb page and click preferences or something like that and under videos there should be a thing you can click on that will turn them off. Hopefully someone more computer-savvy will show up here soon and be able to tell you for sure.

Sorry all you FB users but I shut my FB account down a couple years ago and haven't missed it one iota :)

I need to add here, that also at the same time I turned off the facebook video thing I also started making the habit of disconnecting my computer from the internet whenever I wasnt using it. Honestly dont think that was the problem though- last weekend I forgot to disconnect for 3 days and when I got back on, usage had barely gone up.

I'm not a big facebook user. An hour or maybe two on a real slow day at most when nothing else is going on and I'm on there seeing what my kids are up to haha.

Kinda wondering if there wasnt something to do with the facebook video thing that kept stuff running even when I was logged off of facebook?

I still occasionally watch youtube music videos etc but I always check my usage afterwards and find it's barely gone up even after the videos.

Dont know for sure, but for me at least, it's "fixed" for now....time will tell.

Same here. I can't believe how much time people waste on Facebook and other social networking.

(quoted from p vthe bottom left of the settings page select ost at 02:59:43 10/03/14) How do I turn off the streaming videos?

Thanks
