Grinding in differential

Hey guys I have a 1943 farmall H. Recently I've had a grinding in the rear differential during road gear that's becoming worse. The noise goes away with a depressed clutch coasting. When power is added to the differential the noise becomes very noticeable. I'm wondering what the possibility of this noise may be before I pop the cover. Thanks fellas!

My guess would be pinion bearings. I don't know what it takes to adjust the preload on your Farmall, but maybe it's possible to just tighten it up without replacing any parts.

Drain a little oil and put a magnet in it. if it collects a fuzz of metal it will be best to do as you are going to, that is, pull the top off and see where the self destruction is located. Ring and pinion, carrier bearings outside bull pinion bearings, and inner axle bearings are suspect. If balls fall out, the gears will trap a ball and break the rear housing. Jim

Jack one rear wheel up off the ground and block the
others to keep it from rolling. Then start and run
the tractor in road gear and see if the noise
persists if not jack up the other rear wheel and
try it. If it persists in just one wheel it's most
likely an axle bearing. If it persists when either
rear wheel is off the ground it's most likely a
pinion bearing.

Thanks guys, end of the month I got permission to use the farms shop, they have a lot if tools to make my life and lifting easier. I will update what I find. The noise seems to be coming right from under my feet. Using a magnet wouldn't be a bad idea. I'm just worried it will be a much bigger job than my young paycheck can afford.
