93 Dodge Cummins Smoking

Hi all, 93 cummins reves up to 1000 rpm then smokes and no power , have to start it on either hot and cold , I think its a broken ring ? tubo is good

Did this happen all at once or did it happen over time???

Check for an air restriction.

That will make it start hard and smoke at higher RPMs.

If there is no restriction in the air system I would check the fuel injection system.

They will run like that if they are sucking air on the fuel supply side.

It happened immediately , the air filter is good not sure about fuel system because it was running perfect , but it does have 360 miles on her or 600.000 kilometers .

I would try starting it with the inlet air hoses off the filter an air tubes. Just checking the filter does not mean that it has air flow. I have found things plugging the air intakes on various pieces of equipment over the years.

White smoke is usually incomplete combustion. There are several things that can cause this:

1) An intake air restriction
2) Lack of compression
3) In complete fuel injection.
A) This could be because of bad fuel flow to the injection pump.
B) Also it could be your injection pump failed.

Check your primary fuel pressure. Those Cummings injection systems will not work properly unless they have the right incoming fuel pressure. The lift pump can go bad but most of the time it is the return check valve spring that breaks. The check valve is disguised as a bolt in a banjo fitting where the return fuel line comes off of the injector pump. If you find low or no primary fuel pressure, I would replace that first.

If it takes more than 1 turn of the engine to start you've got a problem. The VE rally dumps the fuel to them under 600 RPM, that's why they put out the big puff of smoke and are running as soon as you bump the starter.

Also check the wire on the FSS. If it's loose it can make intermittant contact once you rev it up, makes you think the engine's coming apart.

How old is the fuel filter?

Have you worked on the pump recently? An improperly indexed throttle shaft/lever can make them do crazy things.

I had a power stroke that would suck the inlet hose flat. Try
diagnosing that! Sounds like a fuel delivery issue on your ride.
