In the 1960s a fella built some pens in a quary like that to hold a couple hundred head of cattle about 18 miles from here near Jamestown,Tn.He kept them in there one winter to fatten them out.He must not have done too well because I think he only did it one year.
 
We've got one like that but most are either open pit or mined off the face of the mountain. I'm a asphalt technician so I've been around that work for 34 years. Foreman took me for a drive in the mine once.
 
Those horizontal lines make it look like it was built there and looks like a foot of dirt on top to farm.
 
I am surprised MSHA does not make them have a porch so when entering or exiting one doesn't get hit from rock off the high wall! I use to work at an underground sand mine in Iowa. They had 14 miles of tunnel when I was there, 30'x30' highways. It was the sand mine that supplied sand to JD and Oliver for there cast forms years ago.
