Round Bale Hay Prices

I've got a couple dozen 4x5 bales that are timothy, red clover, birdsfoot trefoil, and native grass mix baled a little past prime. I was wondering what they are worth. The neighbor is looking for hay it and might be better off making a deal versus dragging the hay to the auction at Penn Yan.

(quoted from post at 15:33:09 12/07/14) baled a little past prime.

Around here that would mean no more than $25 a bale. It also depends on what baler was used. This year in my area there is plenty of hay, good bermuda JD net wrapped can be bought for $30 for a 4x5. 2 years ago you could have named your price.

Bought a few 5x6 from the neighbor mid summer for $40, by this fall I bought about 25 more for $20. Hay is not worth much here in MN this year. Past 3-4 years this same hay would have been $100 or so a bale.

If you can get rid of it without burning it in a brush pile you should do it. No lie - we are using perfectly good bales to start brush piles here. We can't give them away. The animals all have bedding that is better than the feed we were forcing on them in years past.

The hay will rot in the fence rows around here. The guys baled too much, too optimistic. Been hearing about $25 rounds and $3 squares.

The horse people are paying $75 for high quality tested for protien Bermuda grass.

(quoted from post at 01:37:43 12/08/14) Wait till March and sell on Craigslist.

Probably the best idea. I can buy rounds of average grass hay for $10.-15.00 now. In late winter they will be higher.

I just bought some half decent 5x5s for $30 each. In PA. These were twine tied, pretty tight for being baled with a chain baler.

I look at the two auctions results in my area, then get on craigslist and look in the area. Gives me a good idea of the going rate around here.
