Some Pictures from 1950's

These pictures were taken at my dad's home place before I was born. My dad was born and raised on this farm I was raised there also. His dad started an orchard and vegetable business which prospered in those years. The 1st picture show the their pick up trucks they used to haul the fruit and vegetables to St. Louis. Peaches and Asparagus were their main crops along with grain farming. You can see all the peaches my Grandfather and his three sons raised. There were four sons but one died in an auto accident at the age of 23. Rest his sole.
The first few pictures show bushel baskets filled with peaches the sat in the front yard under the shade tree until they were loaded on their 3 pickups then headed to St. Louis Mo. The one picture shows some of the hired hands sitting on the bench for a break while my dad and his dad sort thru the peaches in the back. Another picture shows my dad standing while grandpa is bent over looking at the peaches. Then the 2nd to last picture shows my dad on the far right with 2 of his cousins, a neighbor boy, and dad's brother's father in law. The last picture shows my dad with his two brothers. Dad's oldest brother once told me that he went with Grandpa to look at 35 acres across the oil road from them with the intent to purchase the ground. He bought it and paid for it in 2 years by raising tomatoes on it.
Hope you all enjoy these pictures.

Great pics of the way things were, now you by a can of peaches and its from china! Lol, some really neat pics, thanks for sharing them with us.

Thanks for the pictures. I have very few pictures of any of the family. I guess they thought pictures cost too much to have developed or something. There just are few pictures.

I only have one of my maternal Grand Father. It was actually taken because he was standing with my Mother. He is in none of the other pictures any of us have. We often have wondered if he just did not like his picture taken.

Awesome pictures. Thank you for taking the time to post them. Any old farm pictures to look at are neat. Keep them coming if you have more...

FANTASTIC! That was a very nice time for photos in my book. I wish I had more pictures like that from the 30's - the 60's! & they say Americans wont do that kind of work!!! Can smell those Peaches now!

Like that International truck there in the middle. That's how I learn to drive, feeding cattle with a truck like that.

John, do you know if your Grandpa raised green or white asparagus? My Grandpa raised white on the 16 acres he owned along 161 across from where Belleville East high school is now.

Big Ruh, I'm not sure if they picked white asparagus or not. It's actually the green asparagus before the sunlight shines on it. You have to cut white asparagus before it breaks thru the surface of the soil. Many people don't know that. Much more expensive also. Some think it's two different kinds of asparagus only because they have a field set up so it's easier to dig or pick the asparagus before it pokes thru the surface.

Wonderful pictures!
The one on the left in the picture of five looks like a real rugged guy; massive arms and hands!
That is a beautiful old house; has lots of character!
