OT.Hauling Scrap

I have accumulated a lot of worn out farm equipment, Yesterday loaded a couple loads and it was a bit sad but then I was thankful that I do not have to use that junk any more. Every piece has a memory. The broken wagon tongue that had been welded and scabs applied several times and the old plows that the levers punched my back, The old trailer that broke down on the road years ago. I thought I had forgotten these things. I hope I forget them again. The boys helping me load did not seem to listen as I told these stories

Not many in the "NOW" generation want to hear things about the past. There were a lot of lessons learned in the past thar could benefit them - it's their loss.

I loaded a bunch of that stuff a few years ago. things that I was going to fix and resell or strip for parts. I finally made up my mind I was never going to do any of it. I felt a lot better when I walked away with better than $3000 for the whole mess of it. There's more out there that should go. I'll either get around to it one of these days or it'll be seed for more.

I usually do my spring cleaning a few times a year and send a small load to recycler, which is only 2 miles out of my when I'm going way through town.

A month ago, I cleaned out one garage so I could put my 6 ft woods mower in it for the winter. That produced 340# of scrap. I feel like I have a much larger garage now without the expense of adding on.

Now that I have my chainsaw fixed I will need to go out back and cut out some stuff that I always meant to repair and haul it off. I suppose I am thankful that I can now take the time to work on other things that now interest me.

...and if they did listen, you'd be complaining, calling them lazy for not working hard enough!

Some days I think most of the "problems" with the younger generations are manufactured by the older generations...

I had a young feller about 25 years old from Minnesota approach me about 3 years ago offering to clean up scrap from my two farmsteads, split profits 60/40. He hauled off about 6 or 7 semi loads, and then disappeared. Never got any money, seemed like a nice kid, had his wife and 5 kids with him, did a real good job places are clean. Tried to find him, called sheriff etc, googled him and found address, but no response by phone or mail. Took a few other guys around here too, even the guy he bought semi from.

I sure hope those old plows were worn beyond repair, nothing worse than seeing some of that old machinery with years of use left in them going down the road headed too the scrap yard.

Yup, and when I put them by the road with a for sale sign and advertise on Craig's even at scrap prices, I can't get a call...so off to the smelter they go.

Scrap no such thing as scrap iron it can all be used to make or fix other things. I hate see in go to China who funds North Korea who will attack us sooner or later

When I finally got the guts to scrap out my old combine I'd used for 19 years it wasn't too hard to cut it into pieces small enough to get on a trailer. The tough part came when the crane at the scrap yard picked up the pieces and threw them on the pile. When it picked up that six row corn head that I hated with a passion I got a tear in my eye and silently said "good by my friend". Lots of memories went through my mind on the way home.

Heres a 4 bottom MM plow I just bought..Trail plows are getting hard to come by in my area..

(quoted from post at 07:31:22 12/09/14) Not many in the "NOW" generation want to hear things about the past. There were a lot of lessons learned in the past thar could benefit them - it's their loss.

What I find amusing is that when I was younger, everyone had a story to tell me about what it was like for them, and how they had underwear older than I was.

Now that I am in mid-life, I wish so badly to be able to talk to those who passed away, and told those stories. Now, I get it, and now, I want to hear those stories because now I realize. That was family history that is now lost because I am the next generation and I don't know it.

I wish now was then and I knew then what I know now. I'm sure you have 80 years worth of things that you could tell me, and that is why I like to hear from you an all the others on this forum.

Thank you for the stories!
