Talking about generators

I've got a couple oldies that might well have bad engines. I understand that the gen head doesn't have a bearing on the engine end thus is useless removed from the engine. But spark plug removed from the engine and a pulley put on the engine instead of the pull starter I could hang it off the front of my Wheel Horse and belt drive it just letting the engine spin. Anyway this would mean the gen head would be running backward. Would it generate electricity running backward?

I've seen similar done only removing the pistons.
Leave the plugs in to keep dirt etc out of the holes.
Twist the belt to run it the right direction.
Bad part is it has to run at a nearly constant speed
even as load changes.

Not a lick of difference on the rotation unless it's three phase or it affect the cooling fan.
Driving a dead engine looks like something, some farmer rigged up with what he had laying around.
It will cost less money and run better to obtain an engine from these folk. http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/searchresults.html?search=Taper%20shaft#/keywords=Taper+shaft&res_per_page=36&sort_by_field=Price+Low+to+High&Shaftsize=Tapered

I would just remove the itake valve instead of the spark plug. To remove the piston and rod you have to split the engine off the generator. Once you do that and remove the rod you may not have any oil splash to lube the engine and it will lock up on you and with no rod attached to the crankshaft it will be out of balance and probably knock out your frequency due to constant vibration. IF you remove the engine you just as well put another new engine on it.

Those engine crankshafts have a tapered end on it where the gen head attaches and they can be a bugger to seperate sometimes.
