electric plug in for trailer

Since KEH brought up trailer lights, How do you clean out the corrosion in the plug ins and keep it out? I don't use my trailer very often and have to work at cleaning the prongs enough to get the lights to work every time I want to use the trailer. Somewhere I saw a kit for cleaning the plug ins, but I think it was $50 or $60. Too cheap to spend that much to use trailer once or twice a year. Chris

Get you a can of electromotive spay can cleaner made for that . We use it on our trailers and combine connectons

Dielectric grease comes in a tube from Grote. Probably others have it also. Or just use some Silicone grease. That is what they use where my brother does brake engineering at.

There used to be a contact cleaner made that would remove the green gunk and leave you with shiny metal. I haven't seen it in years. The last couple cans of stuff I bought I might as well have just used carb cleaner.

Loading the plug up with di-electric grease or plain old vaseline works okay for a while. Getting the green gunk off usually involves a pocket knife for me.

I use PB blaster and a $10 wire brush kit you can get from Truck-Lite to clean the rust and green junk out of the plug.

Then I spray the clean parts with di-electric grease. The spray works better as it is not as prone to hydro lock and does not attract dirt as bad as the tube grease.

Then I tuck the wire end into the frame or cover it with a sandwich bag as to avoid direct contact with the outside elements.

Get a plug that fits the one on the trailer and plug it in to cover the trailer plug when not in use. I have put a vehicle plug on my trailers and made a connecting wire between the two. Keep connecting wire in safe dry place. This h as two benefits one connections are kept clean two not easy for some one to steal or use your trailer!

I finally changed it,but the one that was on my stock trailer,I had to pour Coke in it before I plugged it in every time. I discovered that one day when I drove all the way to the sale barn with nothing working. I was just too frustrated to mess with it any more before we left. The wife was drinking a Coke,so while we were in line waiting to unload,I pulled the plug, poured a little bit in,plugged it back in and it worked. I kept a partial bottle up in the corner of the truck bed after that. lol

CLR and Lime-away are also good products for cleaning the corrosion off. They also work good for cleaning battery contacts in lights, etc. where the batteries have leaked.

Thanks for the reply's. I went to town today and got a spray can of Di-electric grease, I have CLR and will check the website for the brushes to clean them up. I'll be ready when I need it now! Thanks again, Chris
