We lost another veteran

At around 4 AM, another veteran went to be with his maker. He served his country in the Navy in the post-WWII cleanup efforts. He was a friend, fishing buddy, and most importantly he was my grandpa.

Rest in peace. My condolences to all the family members and friends. I saw the movie "Unbroken" last weekend and it's a testament to all those of "The Greatest Generation" who helped to keep us free!!

I grew up surrounded by many WW II vets. They left their mark on me by the example they set. Dad was in Pattons third army and was in the Battle of the Bulge. When the war ended in Europe they shiped him to the Phillipines. He never talked about it much and I found out most of it from relatives and his records when he died. These guys never complained they just got the job done. Dad taught me to improvise when I had to but get the job done! So sorry for your loss. Those MEN in kakis and denims built our country and the fellows in suits [I wont call them men] are about to destroy it ! Please cherish his memory we owe those men so much !

One of my retired co- worker's is 95 and he and his wife are in assisted living for the last 4 years. He told me if he had been in the first wave to hit the beach he wouldn't be here. He's also blind. He love to carve wooden ducks too.

Not to change the subject, but would it be possible to come home on another ones dog tag? I had 2 cousins killed in WW2 but there seems to be evidence of one coming home after switching tags.

I retired from the trucking industry in 99. The last 3 years I was with the company I peddled freight to some small mid-west Missouri towns. The veterans administration (at least then) furnished small head-stones for deceased veterans. It seemed like not a day went by back then that I didn't have at least one to deliver somewhere. It still makes me sad when I think of it and I'm glad I'm not doing that now as the deliveries have to be trickling to a standstill.

Sorry for your loss! I am a GREAT grandpa to three wonderful children, and I often think about how we are loosing our older veterans. I had an uncle who was in the first landing group at Normandy. Out of his battalion of 1,000 he was the only survivor. I never questioned his reasoning for not talking about his experiences! And life goes on...

Makes me feel sad reading this. Those old timers, well they just dont make em like that anymore. The country is a worse off place with out them.

Sorry for your loss.

When I was a kid in high school back in the 60's the local VFW asked my music teacher if there was some one who could play Taps for the honor gaurd they provided for veterans funerals. I volunteered and played Taps at several funerals. I came to appreciate what "honor" meant at an early age.
My appreciation and condolences are sent your way.
