1956 John Deere Model 50

Welp.....4 days into having tractor and I think I may have done a boo boo? Yesterday Got tractor to barn while unloading flat wagon I jumped back onto tractor to back up in R welp as I did I extended my left foot out under hood ( As I am 6" 4" high) and doing so hit the Pump swtich on the left hand side.! and heard just a few sec of __RATTLE!#%@&*__ SO...Question is has anyone hit this switch by accident ? while working and if so what is the out come down the road ((good or bad?))
Ps. I really don"t think it did anything major to parts? everything seems to work fine ..Ha I think for now:)

Wes,

The pump "switch" I think you are referring to is a gearshifter. It disengages and engages. Was put there to reduce load on the engine when hydraulics weren't needed also to help with cold weather starts.

If the hydraulics still work with shifter on and no bad noises you are good to go. I have shifted it in with the engine running on my 60.

There is also a PTO disengage lever that cuts it off to the right of the gear shift quadrant. The engine absolutely has to be off to kick this one in gear and there is a noticeable difference in load with that tied in not so much with the hydraulics.

QUIT welping (unless you are female dog) and try not to whack the pump disconnect in the future.

It's a "dog clutch" and it's built pretty tough, but there's no need to abuse it by playing with it with the engine running.

Welp.... I think this is wat you are talking about ? The switch is small turns counter-clockwise and says on and off on it? Never really looked at it much since only had tractor few days now . Other than my size 13" whacking it. :) anyways I had orderd a operators book for it but it has not came in yet. Just wanted ask and see if anyone had any idea wat this switch was for and that if so how it worked if engine could be Runining or not while switching it over?

Thanks much W.V.

It is the hydraulic system engagement. It is a gear engagement. Best to shut the engine of to engage it. As a kid, when Pop wasn't around I used to routinely engage the thing with the engine running. Sold the tractor to a collector in the mid-2000's and the hydraulic engagement still worked fine. Those old two-bangers were tough tractors. I heaped lot of other abuse on that poor old 50 as a kid, but that's another story.

You're right and the book will say that these are not supposed to be engaged with the engine on.

I was just trying to reasure the OP that he likely didn't to any damage.

howdy Donald,

Yeah I Had just got this tractor few days ago. Never owned a John Deere before, Just Olivers.
Anyways I just wanted to see how the thing worked with the tractor running or not? And what it was for? And....Ha if anyone thought it might have caused any damage to anything inside the tractor?

Thanks

Wes,

John, if you want to see what happens when the PTO is shifted in with the tractor running stop by my shop sometime.

Wes,

It appears that the operator's manual has disappeared. All kinds of important info inside. The IT manuals have just enough info to get a person into trouble. The good news is that the nice folks at 1-800-522-7448 have real new JD operators and service manuals on CD and Hard Copy. The parts book is on the JD web site.
