Tired old 77

Was cleaning up some ground today and grabbed a pic of Grandads 77 with Lilliston 7 foot chopper hooked on. People ask why I dont "restore" it. I would be afraid of taking it into a brush patch if it were purdied up!

This tractor did all the work on 50 acres for 30 years and bottom end is still original. There is a lot of piston slap when cold but when warm it quiets down.
My nephew got this chopper for cheap. $130. for new belts. adjust one bearing and it did a good days work today. Any brush 1-1/2" or less gets turned into mulch quickly! It fits the 77 well. These mowers are tough do a nice job a chopping, brush hoggin and even do passable finish work.

I bought a 77 last year and can't wait to get her hooked to something. The hood and fender was pretty rough so I am getting them fixed. I don't have any fancy tractors but hope to get them in working condition. Pictured in my air conditioned show room!

Early on I was getting the old tractors, replacing seals, rebuilding the engines, replacing gears and finishing them up with the museum grade paint job on them. I hated to even uncover them for exercise for fear of a scratch or dirt. No more repaints for me!

Now I do the mechanical work to get them in top running condition and use them as they should be. I like the old girls much better now that I don't worry about the looks.

I'm the same way with my old Farmalls. Half the fun of owning old tractors is using them for what they were intended to do.

Old has one that runs like an old clock. I was impressed with how smooth they run considering what old tractors have been through.

As said I have a 1950 Oliver 77. Took me 5 plus years to find a full set of side curtain for it. Most years in the summer it runs either a Haybine or a square baler

shoot ,, with all that modern bs , computers , solenoids and hydro pumps ,power dividerts perverted engineers have stuk us with tractors that will shut down for the stupidest reason , and you are totally sol up their creek with out a paddle to figure them out ,,.

nice looking machine if its got most or all the sheet metal in pretty good shape id leave it alone you can always rebuild the internals so
you gotta new machine inside but looks original o the outside. all the tractors i get are missing half the sheet metal so they dont look
good with half new paint half original

I have one side curtain, the other we never could figure where it went. Somewhere I have receipt where Grandad bought this in 52 I believe.

I grew up on this tractor and know every nuance of it's being. I think the Olivers in this series were the most user friendly tractors ever made!

I put about 6 hrs on it this weekend clearing grown over pasture ground. It is the longest it has been used at working temp for quite a while. It seemed to like the exercise! It is running pretty smooth now. Like has been said; keep the mechanicals serviced and use it!

It does not bother me to have branches scrape along the sides or it being covered in residue from chopping. I did mow down some 6 foot dead cockle burrs and a bunch of burrs landed on me and under the dash becoming entangled in my hooded sweatshirt. I think I will burn it instead of trying to pick them out. lol

We got 6 acres of Alfalfa, Timothy, Red clover mix planted and another 6 or so chopped. We have some nice grass mix on some patches too.
