Silver King Model 42

I am rebuilding a Silver King Model 42 Tractor which was an abandoned restoration. Got the engine back together, but the timing does not seem right. Ex. Exhaust Valve opens halfway down the piston stroke. I have the timing marks lined up but no way to tell if the gears are a matched set. Would someone have some experience with the Silver Kings?

You can check the timing by looking at the lifters.

Determine where TDC for #1 cylinder is. If this is a 4 cylinder, #4 will also be at TDC. If it's a 6 cylinder, #6 will also be at TDC. For this test, you can just watch the pistons move, you can guess close enough to TDC. The timing gears themselves will determine exactly where the cam will time. If you are off one tooth, it will be obvious.

Hold finger pressure down on the #4 or #6 set of lifters. Rock the crank back and forth, feeling the lifters move. When the lifters are at equal height, the exhaust going closed, the intake beginning to open, (this is called "overlap position"), when timed properly the crank will be at TDC.

I am assuming you mean the valve starts to open half way down.

While it sound slightly early, in general most of the work has been done around half way and the valve is open before the bottom of the stroke to start blowing the cylinder down and getting rid of the exhaust.

If your sure the marks are lined up right it should run.
