Sickle Mower Update...

Okay, first of all, for those that are now confused, I posted the other day about being given a belly mount Ford mower, on the Ford Board, so here is an update to that!

I went to get the "field ready machine" today. Looks to be all there, was sitting in the weeds, could hardly see it. "All" the bolts came in a bag, and the 2 V belts were in his shop. It has a 5 Foot bar on it, it is belly mount.

Has a cable that runs the length of the tractor, then a bracket that actually bolts onto the right rear left arm, that lifts/lowers the mower with the 3 point lever! COOL! :)

Once we get it into the truck, I start looking it over a little more. Has clearly been repainted, Ford red/blue. I notice what appears to be a serial plate, and sure enough, it is! Has a plate on it.

Anyone want to guess what it said? Because FORD isn't correct...

Ding Ding, it says Ferguson! Soooo, maybe that's why he couldn't get it to bolt onto his 8N? Anyway. Will it go onto my 2N?

I want to know before I restore it if it is going to work!! Would it fit on my TO-30?

I can't read the model number, but there is for sure a 6 in it? Anyone have a guess as to what it may be?

Thanks! Bryce

Bryce - would it be a PEO-21 Ferguson mower?

There are a couple of PDF adds showing them at the N Tractor Club website. For whatever reason, I can't post a link to it.

I remember dad & grandpa, both experienced tractor men, put the mower on every Spring. Always took'em 4 hours, IIRC. 1947 9N. Dad was really happy to see the mower traded in on a Woods M5 rotary mower.

The dairy farmer I worked for as a kid, who was very driven and extremely successful as both a farmer and as a businessman had a Dearborn seven footer on his 8N. He mowed all the hay for 60 milkers plus young stock with it for twenty years. He mowed what struck me as very fast with it. I used to ride with him sometimes in the evening, which is when he did most of the mowing. When he got to the corner he would lift the quadrant, quickly put his left hand on the fender to keep me from falling forward, slam on the brakes, shift into reverse, back around then quadrant down and into third and off again. The mower stayed on year 'round and it seemed to always mow very clean.

Bryce, actually that Ferguson mower was made for Ferguson starting in 1939 for the 9N Ford as Ferguson built or supplied all the implements for the ford tractors till the split then Henry started lining up suppliers for his Dearborn line of machinery. Some of the machinery like the rear mounted and I think side mounted mowers were made by Detroit Harvestor and were identical except paint colors and the tag and some will also have a second tag with Detroit Harvestor on it. And Detroit harvestor made mowers for JI Case at the same time.

Oh cool! So it probably will go on the 2N then?

I will keep my eye open for another tag.

This being a 5 footer, I figure I will never cut hay with it, because I have those JD's with 7's on them that I REALLY like, but it will be an AWESOME mower for shows, and for road sides...

My Dad and uncle started off in 1948 with an 8n.Dad always told me it took half a day to put the side mower on.And later they had a jubilee that it took a whole day to mount or dismount. When I was growing up,they had Fast Hitch Ihc, but he said he preferred to mow with the side mower instead of the rear mower.Mark

Brice........that was the ingenious part of the Ford-Ferguson handshake deal. Iff'n ittza 3-point cat-1, itt'll fit. At one time there were 32 3-point implements fer the 9/2/8N tractor. The difference between the 9N/2N and the 8N is the 8N has a 4-speed tranny and the 9N/2N's have 3-speed trannys. Some will have a "Sherman" auxiliary tranny. Oh yes, yer 3-point sickle bar mower will fit yer Ferguson TO-30 as long as you have all the brackets .......historian Dell

You go Bryce! I have a Gravely with a 5foot sickle bar on it. I TOTALLY rebuilt it with new knives and plates, guides etc. When they are set up correctly they are Sooooo sweet! It is like taking a pair of dress scissors and cutting out in the field. Worth every penny of cost and trouble when you use one. SWEET. Jeffcat
