Well I am between tractors again and I found a 50 chevy to work on -- needs to have the oil leaks fixed -- it has a 216 six cyl -- it has a rope rear main seal -- do any of you guys know of a rubber seal that would replace it? Rope seals suck -- thinking to do a good job of sealing up that motor I might as well pull it out -- then the rope seal isnt so bad- any thoughts? Roy

I don't know if it answers your question or not, but ebay has been sending me links to some seals for my C50 this week in response to another saved search. Have a look there and see if they are what you need.

Rope seals are OK if you pull the engine and replace them. I will go with rope seals on my 51 1/2 ton this winter when I do it.

The rope seal isn't bad to replace if you have a "Sneaky Pete". Just pull the new seal through as you pull the old one out.

I had a 51 1 1/2 ton Chevy truck with the 216 inline 6. I had it overhauled with all new seals and gaskets and kept it for 6 years and it never leaked. Those engines had very low oil pressure and rod had no pressure to them .They used the dip system on the rods.

rope seals work fine if installed correctly. Most people that install them and have leaks are the ones that didn't compress the seal correctly.

I used the rope seals when I redid the stock 235 in my late 47 Chevy 3/4 ton. If I recall, they came from McMaster-Carr....

Roy Before you pull seal pull road draft pipe on right side of engine burn it out shake it out and reinstall this will cause oil leak
