my 06 2500 hd Chevy is shifting badly. it
shifts Real hard from first to second and
again to third. it just started this. is
there something simple I can do to fix
this? 6.0 gasser with automatic
transmission. Thanks

I can't offer a solution to your problem.
But I have an 07 2500 HD 6 speed gasser with 50,000 on it. Mostly pulling miles. I never liked the way it shifted in trailer mode from day one. I hope that doesn't mean I too will have further tranny problems in my future. Sometimes it just doesn't want to shift up when I feel it should. Sometimes I just run it in manual mode when I'm not out on the highway.
It works fine when in the normal operating position.

Dirty fuel filter?? Happened to be the cause of delayed upshift on my '98. Yeah I know it is a long shot.

ny lights on on the instrument cluster? Is the speedometer working?

Probably not what you want to hear, but I deliver auto parts part time with a 2013 cube van with the same engine/tranny. Last fall it was shifting kind of hard at 96,000 miles. Left me stranded when it went out completely. It doesn't haul much of a load, and it was all highway miles. Hadn't been serviced, don't know if that would have made a difference or not. Currently has 157,000 on it, rebuilt seems fine so far.

UD,
You should have a 4L80 in yours being an 06.
The rest of the guys in the posts should all have 6L90s. 07 and newer.

Honestly, it could be a bunch of things, hard to narrow down.
Something as simple (but expensive) as the TCM going bad.
Lots of codes could be set too. Do you have a check engine light on?

Bad ground?, charging system working right? shift solenoids, line pressure?

Sorry no quick answer.
Rick

I noticed that my 1500 4x4 is doing the same and worse when it gets hot , in fact I ease off on the throttle and it will shift better . So , I just added a bottle of Lucus yesterday and it seems to be helping a tad . the model is a 4L6OE

I should have mentioned that.
Yes, check engine light is on. Happened about the same time shifting problem started.
Thanks.

You need to start with the check engine light. The trans is probably getting a false sensor reading and defaulting to max line pressure. Scan for codes and start there first.

My 05 did the same thing. I took it to the local tranny shop and hooked the computer up and drove it, when it shifted hard from 1st to 2nd the pressure would spike in the torque converter and make it slam into gear. The converter took a crap and of course put junk into the tranny.

UD.
See what that check engine light code is. Might tell you a lot. Im guessing something is driving your line pressure to the max to get the hard shifts.

Like 4play says, bad sensor, etc, or any signal. I have heard low voltage can do it, have yet to see that though.

Let us know what you find.

Rick

Tow mode holds off upshifts and hastens downshifts to keep the rpm up, protecting the engine and transmission from lugging too much. It's doing what it's supposed to do. With the 06 v6 I had I got best fuel mileage in tow mode because it also keeps the converter locked up.

hen its probably not a transmission problem. Find out what the code is that turned the check engine light on and fix it. Then the shifting may return to normal.
