Hearing corn grow?

I posted this in Tales(Sorry, but I don't know where it really belongs).

Back when I first bought my place, I moved my camper to the easiest place to access. It was near my corn fields. I had planted the crop using Pioneer XXXX (I forgot the #).
Anyway, Sometimes I had some down time and just sit outside of the camper and enjoy the evening.

On really quiet evenings, I could hear popping, cracking and a sound that I can't put into words...kinda like a 'squeezing' sound.

Over the years I have asked others about these sounds. Most responses are that I am hearing the corn growing.

Anyone else ever hear these sounds and what do you attribute them to?

Corn cannot be heard to grow. What you're hearing are all the deer and coons and other assorted vermits out in there raising cane. It will only get worse.

My one buddy back in middle school & high school was the middle son of three on a large cattle/hog/grain farm. He claimed you could hear corn grow. I suspect he was right. I could never hear it over the noise of the tractors.

What you are hearing is the leaves opening up or unfurling. On a quiet night with no wind, it makes a gentle rustling noise.

You can hear corn creaking and popping especially at night when it is in the fast growing stage. Around here, the weather has to be fairly dry or the frogs and other creatures of the night will drown out everything.

It is the sound of corn growing. A stalk is made of telescoping sections. Each outside section is wrapped rather tightly around the inner one. Growth occurs at the base of the inner section. The outer sections of stalk are wrapped tight enough to prevent the expanding/growing cells at the base of the inner section to easily push that section up. So they grow and expand until there is enough pressure to overcome the friction between the sections and then the inner one "jumps" up a little. That makes the "crackling" sound you hear. A warm calm night and plenty of moisture in the ground can make for quite a racket in the field.
