Mower has lost rpms

Hey everyone sunday before last I ran the mower out of gas. on Saturday I think or Friday I brought some gas in and poured it in, and the battery was dead. so I put the charger on. this evening my wife went to mow the grass and it can mow what I mowed last week if she goes slow but just stops cutting and bogs down real bad when she gets to the slightly weedy very over grown part of the lawn I didn't get to. I think I stirred up a bunch of junk in the tank maybe when I poured the gas in. I think its the fuel filter but thought I would ask around here. It just sounds like its at half throttle when it is in the full position. my wife is ready for a new mower and im thinking about our land payment our baby due in august combine payment baler payment. I don't want to think about a mower payment
thanks guys

You must of left the key on when it ran out of gas. Is it a twin? Might of burned out an ignition module, is it only running on one cylinder? Troublshoot!!!!

I think you may be on the right track, regardless of brand.
Filter is cheap to try. So is cleaning the carb if needed.
If one of those is the problem, you may want to clean the tank too.

If its fuel related, it is probably in the carburetor. With no load does it surge? Does it make any difference if you feather in the choke?

It its a 2 cylinder, are you sure its running on both cylinders? V-twins have 2 coils and if one is not firing you lose power and rpms. Another consideration with 2 cylinders is if one cyinder has valve trouble. That can cause low power/lower rpms too.

Some mower gas filters are just a screen and crap gets past it. If I think I have a dirty carb, I remove the bowl and look inside. Some carbs you can do it with removing carb from engine. One carb even had a drain plug like the old marvel carbs have.

Like others say, make sure it's firing both cylinders (if it's a 2 cyl).

Also look at the throttle cable, make sure it hasn't slipped and not giving it full speed. And check the governor linkage and the choke linkage, be sure they aren't packed with grass and not getting full travel.

It might help us help you if you said what it was. With what you have said it could be a number of problems like a throttle cable that is bad or the gov linkage binding up etc etc etc

sorry gents it is a craftsman zts 7500 with a v twin can't believe I didn't put that in there. it has an inline filter that is folded paper. I am by no means an expert but it feels like it is firing on both cylinders but I will check that. thanks again guys

I have and old briggs v twin. I removed the air filter and found a drain plug on bottom of carb bowl. Remove plug, catch the fuel, look for dirt. Might tell you if you need to clean carb. It's also possible you have a diafram fuel pump between tank and carb that may be going bad. See how much fuel you remove from carb. Try a different pump.

The last engine I worked on, the carb was full of crap and rust, main jet was blocked. Had to use a small wire to open jet. I get upset when people leave mowers out in the rain and I run into all rain related problems. Water in fuel tank and carb, rusted carb and ignition switch, mower shaft rusted frozen in place, trans-axle locked up, the list goes on. Some even have gas cans with no lids so dirt, grass, bugs, and rain get in fuel and they think nothing of putting it in the tank. What can they expect?
