Bale spear for 300

If I get a bale spear for the rear 3pt on my 1955 Farmall 300 will it lift it?
Would the front end come up pretty good? Had my baler guy make em a
little lighter. He said they probably 700-800 lbs. Thanks.

I have a bale fork for the Fast Hitch 3-point adapter on my 350 and can lift and carry 1500 lb 5x6 round bales. Before mounting the loader the front end would get VERY light, even with the extra weight of the wide front axle. However, if your bales are only 800 lbs you should be fine.

I'm surprised 1500lbs works. 800 I would think would.

I'd be careful putting that much weight leveraged on the light rear axles of a 300. Dad busted both of them over the years on our 300; granted that was a bit of a manufaturing issue on the originals, but the axles are a bit light on those models.

Well the bale is a real professional job and the picture doesn't lie. I had an IH 464 45 hp, wide front, gas back in '79 and it wouldn't pick up that bale. After a homemade front bracket and 4 pieces of railroad rail from sidings, not main line, 4" high as I recall, 24" long, she changed her mind. On 800#, it should be a walk in the park. I have a little 30 hp Ford 2000 with no counter weight, with my current 5x4 (a 5x6 but stopped at 4' diameter) 800# bales are a no brainer.

According to the Fast Hitch manual the wheel spacing does effect the capacity of the hitch. With a track width setting up to 80 inches the utility carrier is rated up to 1500 lbs on the 350 but this drops to only 1000 lbs when set to 88 inches. (The 450's capacity is 500 lbs greater in each case.) My wheels are set at 60 inch centers so they're about as narrow as possible. However, the center of mass of the bale is further back than what a load in the carrier would be so I'm over-doing it by some degree. I just carry a bale like this about once a month from Point A to B on the yard and take it slow and easy. I wouldn't want to subject the tractor to this every day, though.
