O/T Herbicide Question

Can I spray Glyphosate on roundup ready soybeans. From what I've read about glyphosate it is Roundup. Has anyone else sprayed it on or around beans?
I want to kill some weeds around my dad's machine shed and don't want to hurt the beans that are only 10ft from the shed. That 10ft section all needs to be sprayed since it doesn't get mowed.

Read the label. Usually they inform you of just such as you ask and give you directions as to how you go about it, like don't spray prior to this or that growth, or wait till 3 weeks after germination sort of thing.

Roundup is the trade name for glyphosate.

Don't go cheap. Pay for Roundup. It runs a different strength and by the time you mix generic to get your results it is cheaper to pay for the brand. I buy Roundup by the tote for all the fields and put a pencil to it a long time ago.

Don't expect results the next day. Or the day after that. If you mix it hot enough to see results in a couple of days those beans will be toast. Roundup is a patience game!

John B. JMS/.MN has it correct. The active ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate. Some generics are: Glystar Plus, Touchdown,Eraser,etc. Just make sure it is the 41% Glyphosate product and your good to go. The Roundup found at Lowes and others is around 24% Glyphosate. So watch for the LBS. of active ingredient per gallon. They run from a high of around 4.5 LBS per gallon for Roundup Powermax to as low as 3.5 LBS. per gallon for some of the cheaper generics. Just figure the cost per LBS. of the active ingredient when you comparison shop.

notjustair Maybe correct about Round up being the "better value" in his area but it is not that way in this area. We have some good independent suppliers that keep the COOPs in line. Roundup has more active ingredient per gallon and some built in crop oil/surfactant but if you match the rates of the generic and Roundup so that your applying the same amount of actual product then they will control the weeds the same. Then you need to look at the cost per acre not the cost per gallon of the product. I have done this calculation every year for the last 4-5 years since Roundup came off patent. Roundup has cost more per acre every single year even with the need for a higher rate using the generic product and additional crop oil/surfactant.

Missouri State University has a very good study they conducted on how the products stacked up and the results where that the weeds were controlled the same if you matched rates.

Now -some- sprays that you would get from the lawn and garden center may have extra stuff in it to 'quick kill' some weeds or have a residual action. So read the label clearly for active ingredients.

But, glyphosate is the generic name of the product Monsanto trademarked as Roundup. It is like Kleenex are facial tissues......

Are they your beans or your neighbors? Don't just assume they are Roundup ready. Some of us plant "Liberty" beans.

I buy off brands and check for the 41% glyphosphate which is there. Course I buy the 2 1/2 gallon size in the 2 per box. Maybe that's why I get the good stuff.

A guy on here was asking about why his didn't kill his weeds overnight, like the TV commercial where the guy sprayed a couple of weeds emanating from cracks in his driveway and in the next shot they are dead.....not quite. I didn't think about it much till it got hot but have found out that published data says that the hotter the ambient the faster it works. Tried it and believe it. We're pushing 100 right now and I noticed results starting on the 3rd day.
