Horsenettle control

I have gotten a horsenettle problem in one of my hay fields. The other ones I am going to try to control with spot spraying some milestone plus. I started to spot spray the one patch but I think it may have gotten ahead of me. Is there anything I can spray that won't kill the clover? If I can't find anything to spray on it I will probably just mow it down and keep mowing it until the horsenettle is controllable. What is your experience with this dang weed?

BK, a book on weeds that I have says that horsenettle thrives when phosphorus is low. I am gradually bringing up my P level in a field with horsenettle problems, and it is definitely reducing the population. This may be one tool to help reduce your problem with this very nasty weed.

Also, it seems to me like it grows better in lighter, low PH soils. We never see the stuff in heavy black soil.

How much moisture do you have? Most weeds do better in dry soil, so you just have to arrange for it to rain.

I know it is not an option for most people, but we grazed pastures down to almost bare ground with sheep.(sheep will not eat them either) Then spot sprayed after we cut them off by hand. We also loaded them on a hay rack and hauled and burned them. No seeds.

Clover and horsenettle are both from the broadleaf family of weeds. Horesnettle is also a member of the nightshade family and is toxic, but, it's rare for livestock to eat it.

Anything that will kill the horsenettle will kill the clover. GrazonNext is very effective on horsenettle, but you would have to apply by spot spraying and be very careful. Perhaps a few small patches of dead clover is worth the dead horsenettle.
