International H will not start

I have an H that has a dead spot on the starter, I can hand crank it over and then can hit the starter and it will start. Had it running and then it died...battery was weak so we pull started it...it ran again for a few minutes and then died again. When I tried starting again it fired but then stopped. I can't turn it over by hand anymore and when I tried to pull start it won't turn over that way either. I pulled each spark plug and found them to be dry....the last thing I checked was the coolant and it was very low which was not how I had left it when I had it running last...opened the petcocks on the oil pan and the oil came out black so don't think the coolant went into the pan. Would it have locked up that fast or is it just vapor locked somehow? Any thoughts would be appreciated

The starter drive is probably locked up on the ring gear. Either take the starter loose and let the drive retract, or the easy way is to put the tractor in fifth and rock it backwards until the fan turns. If you hear a clunk then you've freed the starter drive. Some of mine do this occasionally, if it is persistent a new starter drive usually fixes it. Sometimes the ring gear needs to be turned, replaced, or relocated 90 degrees to get the normal stop position away from the starter drive.

Weak battery or poor battery connections cause the starter drive to get locked up in the flywheel ring gear and if you try to pull it you can and will damage things and may end up buying a new start and or installing a new ring gear or both. Pull the starter bolts loose an wiggle the starter and good chance it will unlock from the ring gear

Pull out the starter. Check the bendex. Oil it,make sure
it moves freely. Move it forward all the way and keep
moving it a couple of revolutions to make sure nothing is
binding.

thanks for the help...did like you said...took several attempts but got it to retract and it came loose...am gonna pull the starter out and have rebuilt..thanks for the help
