Generator question

Have a Delco-Remy generator on my Farmall 504. I have it apart and tested the armature. I can get continuity across all sections of the commutor. From what little I know about them, that is not right. Correct? Shouldn't I only get continuity between sections directly opposed from each other?

It is wound in one continuous loop of wire so it will show continuity on any and all segments. Best get it tested on a growler.

A growler is a box looking device with a giant set of laminated claw shape cradle that you lay you armature on and then lay a steel bar on top of that. Plug it in to the wall socket and you turn the armature and see if that blade "growls" . That is where things are bad. If you measure with an ohm meter you should not get a reading from any of the sections to the shaft. They usually do this test with a neon light. Find a repair shop if there are any near by. Think I have this all correct. The last one I checked was like 1980.

It is a piece of test equipment. Most people and some shops have never heard of.When you find a shop ask if they have one. If they don't find another
shop.

BK, you ask: From what little I know about them, that is not right. Correct?

YOURE WRONG

You should show very low resistance continuity from any one commutator segment to any other

HOWEVER there should be an open circuit from any to the steel shaft otherwise the armature windings are shorted

Look for melted solder windings to segments or burned pitted segments THATS BAD

A Growler is how a genny shop would test it

Be sure to clean the insulator between segments so the dust does not short between the contacts.....
