I have a 69 jd 4020 that smoke alot at low rpms with slight smoke at higher rpms. It's a grey is black smoke. And it does not use any oil. Is it a fuel problem?

If your tractor doesn't have a precleaner above the hood, there is a precleaner filter on the top side of the air cleaner housing that a lot of guys forget about. At the same time check the hoses between the air cleaner and the intake manifold. chris

I agree with matthies. Air filter under hood he referred to is parts key 2.

Not at part load. I can't recall if the 4020 has an air filter inside the air filter or not ?
Retarded pump timing will make some smoke .
The colour of the sky or trees behind the tractor will either highlight or hide smoke .

Sounds like our 4020. It has been on this farm since new and rebuilt once. It has 24,000 hours on it now. It uses no oil but smokes a good bit. Years ago the stack was cut off so it fit in the lean to. Now you eat all of that. I rake with it and every year and I swear I'm going to put an extension on it. It hasn't happened.
