Spin spreader with cab tractor??

Well it is getting cold out and I still need to spread some grass seed for a Duck's Unlimited job. Probably a good 8 hours of work, 35 miles away so I would like to do it in one day. Problem is the highs are only going to be in the 30's....so I would like to use my cab tractor. With the spin spreader I have, I would not be able to reach the handle to shut off the seed flow when I turn around. Any brilliant ideas on how to modify it? A hydraulic cylinder would be nice, but how do you keep the rate uniform? DC motor/actuator would be nice but $$$. I don't think I can extend the handle and still reach it through the cab window....maybe a rope and pulley system? Anyone else solve this problem already??

How about using a windshield wiper motor?

Shouldn't cost much at a boneyard, or maybe you've got and older vehicle sitting around waiting to be scrapped?

I've used them for several projects over the years to operate sprayer valves, etc..

Very similar motors are used on combines to operate variable speed fan drives, sieve adjustments, etc..

I was going to suggest the wiper motor or power window thing. But I really like the idea of a (pto) cable system.

(quoted from post at 21:04:02 11/12/15) A few brackets and a 10 foot long locking PTO control cable should get you going.

I like it.....where might I find one for sale? Is that like one used on a truck?

Sounds about like the trip rope on a pull spreader from the co-op.

I have one of those seeders I use for small jobs. If it were me I would put a spring on the handle
so it's natural position is closed. Then tie a pull rope to it. Tack a pulley on somewhere and then
set the spreader at the height you will use it. Pull on the slide rope and tie it off somewhere above
the spreader. When you raise the spreader it should make slack in the line and close it. Then just
raise your three point at the end of the run and set it back down after you turn around. It will open
and close itself automatically. You just need to make sure you lower it to the same height. If you
go down farther than your trial run you will pull the gate open more.

hy such 'precision' concern?

I put one on the back of my side by side. I used a shift control cable and handle off of a old speed boat Works good.

I use 2 ropes and pulleys. Just wired the
pulleys, Rope on right turns it on. Rope
on left shuts it. But I spread around the
ends, workes for me.

This is pretty expensive seed I am spreading.....

Actually it has the adjustable stop, so it would just go to that point and the rope would slack.....I will have to take a look at it tomorrow. The other problem I see is side to side sway when I am turning...that rope may need a spring on it also.

That's possible also. I will be pulling a drag some distance behind the spreader to work the seed in the ground, so I will be making wide turns. The patches I am seeding are small and numerous, so lots of turns. Then I will be running a packer over the seeded areas.

Any outfit that deals with medium to heavy duty truck parts should have them on the shelf.
I have bought them from a few automotive parts stores as well.
