16.1 percent corn

Had the sample tested at the elevator. Guess I will run a truck full up to them tomorrow. This is long season corn and last year I had short season and couldn't get below 30% at this same time. Ran 24-27% when I finally threw in the towel the week before Christmas and took the whole lot to the elevator.

So here is the question. The neighbor would like to buy some in 50 lb bags. I haven't told him yes or no because I am a little unsure about whether it is dry enough to bag it up. I don't want it molding on him. Anyone know?

It all depends on how long he plans to keep it before he uses it. 16-17 percent will keep while it is cold. So if he feeds it up before the spring warm up it will be fine. After that he would be on borrowed time.

As for this year's corn being dryer than your last year's corn. The number of day corn is not the difference. Your corn last year did not mature correctly. Either it was planted too late, not enough heat units, or drought/wet stressed. Any of these things can cause corn to not mature. Then you have high moistures and lower test weights.

The corn crop this year had better conditions so it matured correctly. So it is drying down in the field. I would get to harvesting ASAP as Nov. is getting late enough that we can get snows and high winds can knock stalks down.

If he uses it up in a couple of months the 16% may be okay. 15% would be okay for many months.

I have 2500 bu of 16% setting on wagons and grain carts and I am not worried about it but it is going to the ethanol plant after the first of the year.

I'm more worried about the bag situation. Is he doing that? If I had to do it he would be paying feed store price plus convenience. That would be a nightmare.

Best wishes with the combine this year. May your harvest be as uneventful as mine was, PTL!

It will be OK if it gets/stays cold and gets it frozen, personally I would want it down to below 14 to store in a bag.

Yeah...I am on it. I have the combine completely up to speed and went all thru the old corn head too. I'm not expecting to get away completely without trouble but I know so much about the equipment now I can probably fix most minor issues. Plus, I have a shed this year and can pull in out of the weather to do repairs. Makes all the difference! :)

Thanks...I appreciate it! I think I am in good shape this year. The fella wants to buy the corn, but I am going to bag some up and give it to him. He has a few acres he has let me cut hay on for the last several years and won't take a nickel in rent.

Hauled in corn that was 16.7-16.3 56.1 test weight 2 weeks ago. This was 100day corn. Here in MI. Mine was 15.9 saved about 200 bu in a wagon to feed. As soon as the weather gets decent again will bin it then spread it out and use by next summer. If it is spread and then kept spread out thin like not over a foot deep it will keep if I use it through the winter. Also moving it will help to get air to it.
