at the exchange places they want 20.00 and the tanks only have 15 lb of gas in them.at the weld shop its .79 a lb on a scale much better price and they will fill my motor home too. what do you pay at the exchange?

I don,t think the exchange thing has come down much around 20 bucks here but propane must be like gas down some. Been really warm here for the past 60 days. The girl where we get ours for the farm called last week and wanted to know if there was any way we could hold some propane. They had more than they could move and more scheduled to come in.

Just exchanged 2 tanks last week for the grill $20 bucks a pop the local hardware store gets $15 to fill em. The only reason I exchanged them is 2 of my tanks were out of date over 12 years old and the hardware store wouldn't fill them as I was out this fall and went to get one filled and after I paid for a fill the guy said it was too old so I went inside and bought a new tank for $35 bucks plus the fill for $15 the tanks I just got don't seem as heavy but have a new date of 10-2015 I do think they were lighter than the hardware store filled tanks but I did not weigh them now I will go to them to fill them for the next 12 years

That's the best thing about the exchange rack. Take all of your old out of date tanks and get nice new tanks. Costs a lot less than buying a new tank and a fill up. Usually. One of the junk yards near me used to take the out of date tanks from that company to crush them. There were hundreds a couple of times.

(quoted from post at 23:35:58 12/13/15) They can be re-certified, just a close inspection, no dents or rust spots, they're good to go. HF has number stamps.
That's not how it's done.... and if there is something wrong it could have disastrous effects.

NOT to say it couldn't happen, but can you quote ONE verifiable incident of an out-of-date 20 pound LP tank having "disastrous effects"?

I normally get my propane tanks refilled, but if I have an old tank, I always exchange it to get a newer tank. Last week the 20 pound propane tank exchange price was just under $15 at Menards. I don't know the fill weight inside the tanks. The exchange company covers the cost of updating the valves on old tanks, and scrapping out of date tanks as a cost of doing business. For me, it's worth $15 for a newer tank with about 15 pounds of propane.
